Lawlor, Joseph (1979). State Requirements for High School Graduation: Communication Skills. Technical Note. This paper contains descriptions of documents setting forth the minimum communications skills competencies required for high school graduation in seven states: Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Utah. It then describes the procedures used to compile a synthesized list from those documents for use in a project to assess the need for post-elementary communication skills instruction. Simonelli, Richard (1995). Bridging Anthropology and Native People, Winds of Change. Zuni students from Twin Buttes High School (Zuni, New Mexico) made a presentation at the annual meeting of the Society of Applied Anthropology addressing the age-old conflict between Indians and anthropology. The presentation, entitled "Zuni Students Look at Frank Hamilton Cushing," examined the career of a famous ethnologist who spent four years at Zuni in the 1880s. Rood, Magdalena M. (1989). Assessing Language Proficiency: More Than One Way To Skin a Cat. Insights on Educational Policy and Practice, Number 12, Insights on Educational Policy and Practice. Alternatives to standard language proficiency testing of bilingual or language minority students are discussed in this educational policy bulletin. The New Mexico strategy is described, which uses multiple assessment techniques to identify students' home language, assess oral English proficiency through standardized testing and teacher observation, and measure students' content skill areas included on state competency tests. American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, Washington, DC. (1972). Social Change and Teacher Education. Proceedings of the Biennial School for Executives of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. (15th, University of Virginia, August 16-22, 1970). This is a compendium of papers from this week-long session. The keynote paper, of the same name as the booklet title, was written by the Honorable Joseph M. Montoya, senator from New Mexico. Pierce-Jones, John; And Others (1967). Pre-Test Report on National Head Start Evaluation. This pretest report on the National Head Start Evaluation Project gives data on ethnicity and ages of children enrolled in four Head Start centers in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona, and describes the present status of evaluation at these centers. Completed pretests, proposed evaluation instruments, and available pretest data are presented. Appendices, which make up two-thirds of the report, give pretest distributions of scores on the Stanford Binet and distributions of chronological ages by location, ethnicity, and sex. The field-tested adaptation package for the Southwest version of the four-unit career development and life planning curriculum for rural high school students consists of selected pages and case studies from the basic teacher's guide and student activity sheets, adapted to the Southwest; most of the specific examples are from New Mexico. Allen, Carter (1977). A Strategy for the Systematic Followup of Graduates of Personnel Preparation Programs. The procedure is described for a followup of the graduates of the University of New Mexico Department of Special Education; which was conducted in order to evaluate the academic programs. The components are comprised of: developing survey instruments; maintaining a correct mailing list; obtaining basic followup information; obtaining extensive followup information; and analyzing and reporting results. Moehlenbrock, Fred A. (1973). The Traveling Seminar — A Creative Workshop, Catalyst for Change. The New Mexico Research and Study Council felt workshops could be fun as well as interesting and educational. In 1972, a conference tour bus, including a library, open and closed circuit television, and other necessary audiovisual equipment, was obtained and the traveling seminar operationalized.
