May, Philip A. (1988). Mental Health and Alcohol Abuse Indicators in the Albuquerque Area of Indian Health Service: An Exploratory Chart Review, American Indian and Alaska Native Mental Health Research. A random review of medical and mental health charts at Indian Health Service (IHS) units serving New Mexico and southern Colorado revealed that 21 percent of individuals using IHS services during a 10-year period came at least once for alcohol or mental health problems. White, Sharon Dean; Cummings, Merrilyn N. (1995). Goal Setting and Control Orientation of Pregnant/Parenting Female Adolescents in the GRADS Program, Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal. No differences in goal orientation or locus of control were apparent among 151 New Mexico adolescents: 37 long-term GRADS (Graduation, Reality, and Dual Role Skills) participants, 46 new to GRADS, and 68 controls. Cornelius, Georgianna (1990). A Border Issue in Teacher Training: Respecting the Diversity of Children, Journal of Educational Issues of Language Minority Students. Oliver, William (1991). Education after Graduation, Currents. Two successful alumni continuing education programs at Columbia University (New York) are an annual seminar event offered in New Mexico and Italy and an on-campus evening colloquium series. The travel program sparks intellectual exchanges and allows cultivation of prospective donors. The colloquium series uses an interdisciplinary approach in exploring substantive readings. Hopwood, Mark (1996). A Destination College: SIPI Blends Technical Education with Human Development, Winds of Change. The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is working towards obtaining accreditation for a two-year Associate of Science Degree in Electronics Engineering. SIPI is a tuition-free vocational-technical training institution, designated in 1993 as a community college. Since 1991 the institute has enforced a zero-tolerance alcohol policy for its students. Schaufele, Christopher; Srivastava, Ravindra (1995). Earth Algebra: Real-Life Mathematics in Navajoland, Journal of Navajo Education. An algebra class at Navajo Community College (Shiprock, New Mexico) uses traditional algebra topics to study real-life situations, focuses on environmental issues, encourages collaborative learning, uses modern technology, and promotes development of critical thinking and decision-making skills. Students follow principles of Dine educational philosophy in studying effects of global warming on water supplies in their region. Gonzales-Berry, Erlinda (1996). Bridging the Gap: A Content-Based Approach, ADFL Bulletin. Argues that a gap exists in university-level foreign-language curriculum that requires a "bridge," that is, a course designed to take students from where they are to where they should be to study for a foreign-language major and describes the bridge course in Hispanic culture at the University of New Mexico. Griffiths, John; Degner, Ann (1995). Training for Instructional Uses of Multimedia at San Juan College: Toward the Campus of the Future, Journal of Educational Technology Systems. Discusses a multimedia computer-assisted instruction training project at San Juan College (New Mexico) within the context of current research in the area. Research demonstrates that the complexity of hypermedia requires methodical management, cognitive factors limit the optimum number and types of hypermedia link displays, and close monitoring of learner-system interaction reveals important cognitive differences in individual learners. Seevers, Brenda S.; Dormody, Thomas J. (1995). Leadership Life Skills Development: Perceptions of Senior 4-H Youth, Journal of Extension. A survey of 400 senior 4-H participants in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico received 238 usable responses identifying the top three 4-H activities contributing to leadership development: holding office, teaching younger members, and fairs. Greatest involvement in leadership activities was in implementing and evaluating; few were involved in planning.
