Frank, F. J. (1975). Interpret Education to Your Community, Communication: Journalism Education Today. A retired Lieutenant Colonel who advises radio, newspaper, and yearbook staffs at Las Cruces High School, New Mexico, reflects on the important role education serves in a community, and suggests schools should use public relations programs to better inform the community. Lopez, Linda C. (1993). Mexican-American and Anglo-American Parental Involvement with a Public Elementary School: An Exploratory Study, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. Nineteen Mexican-American and 24 Anglo-American parents whose children attended a K-3 school in New Mexico had high rates of parent involvement regardless of ethnicity or income level. Both groups mentioned parent-teacher conferences as their most frequent involvement and interest in child's success as their most frequent motivation. Hutto, Nelson Nora; Cooper, Lloyd (1992). Education and Economic Development: Can the Two Really Work Together?, Journal of Rural and Small Schools. Surveyed 134 small rural school administrators in New Mexico, west Texas, eastern Arizona, and southern California to determine their perception of education's role in economic development. Data suggest that most school districts place comparatively little emphasis on economic development. Offers strategies for communities to engage in active economic development. D'Alonzo, Bruno J.; Giordano, Gerard; VanLeeuwen, Dawn M. (1997). Perceptions by Teachers about the Benefits and Liabilities of Inclusion, Preventing School Failure. This survey of 336 New Mexico regular and special educators investigated their perceptions of the benefits and problems of inclusion. Results indicated skepticism and a mixed opinion about potential benefits of inclusion and an overwhelming expectation that problems would be inherent in a unified system of education. Tarcy, Brian (1995). On Safe Turf: Schools Provide a Positive Alternative to Gangs, Teaching Tolerance. Describes some of the ways public schools are coming up with innovative methods to help students stay out of gangs. Newton, Ray (1980). Southwestern Area Beginning Students Lack Language Skills, Community College Journalist. Twenty-five community colleges and universities in Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico responded to a questionnaire evaluating general overall writing quality of beginning journalism students. Responses support the conclusions that journalism departments may need to lower standards, require English proficiency examinations, and institute remedial courses. Wilson, John S. (1992). Cooperation among Depository Libraries in the Southwestern United States, Government Publications Review. Reports results of a questionnaire sent to depository libraries in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Survey collected demographic information on documents librarians and information on library cooperation, including relationships with regional depository libraries. Tamppari, Raymond; Johnson, Gordon (1975). Local District Science Programs: Present Status and Future Trends with Implications for Teacher Training, Science Education. Describes a survey of secondary schools in five states (California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah) designed to provide guidelines for the education of secondary science teachers. The present status of science program innovations and predicted trends in science enrollment indicate that prospective science teachers should be familiarized with new curricula, performance objectives, and general science teaching. Jeffers, George; Hutchison, Kari (1995). Breaking Barriers, American School Board Journal. A survey of 140 school districts in the border states of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas about techniques for reaching Hispanic parents elicited responses from 48 school officials. Advice includes: write letters and other material in Spanish as well as English, employ bilingual school personnel, and schedule parent-teacher meetings around working hours. Dekker, Dale R. (1996). The Littlest Learners, American School Board Journal. When the voters of Carlsbad, in southeast New Mexico, passed a $14 million bond referendum in 1992, the school board decided to use a portion of the money to consolidate the kindergarten, Head Start, and developmentally delayed preschooler programs into one building. Journal of Aerospace Education (1974). Teacher Certification Requirements–Aviation Education 1974-75. Cites the teacher certification requirements of states for aviation teachers as a way of assisting high school administrators and teachers in determining proper qualifications for teaching aviation courses. Special attention is directed to Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Oregon, New Mexico and Texas for their reasonable but different approaches to certification. Tangman, Ruth S. (1994). Beyond Building Communities: To Collaborate with Its Neighborhood, T-VI (Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute) Had to First Build Trust, Community College Journal. Describes a partnership between Albuquerque Technical-Vocational Institute (New Mexico), neighborhood associations, and city government to revitalize a decaying community center by establishing a child care center for children of low-income parents. Describes initial neighborhood resistance to institute expansion and efforts to maintain community collaboration. Presents excerpts from selected state-of-the-art reports on initiatives for educational technology that were received from individual states in response to a request from the yearbook editors. Schon, Isabel (1990). A Selection of Hispanic Nonfiction for Young Adults, Journal of Youth Services in Libraries. This annotated bibliography lists 10 works of English-language nonfiction recommended for Hispanic young adults, including a view of pre-Columbian Mexico, biographies of controversial Hispanic men, an anthology of the writings of Juana Ines de la Cruz, an account of bullfighting, and books about Hispanic countries and Hispanic villages in New Mexico. Grieshop, James I.; Harris, Mary B. (1974). Effects of Mode of Modeling, Model Age, and Ethnicity on Rule-Governed Language Behaviors, Journal of Educational Psychology. The effect of three model variables on student performance of syntactic and semantic language behaviors in the absence of direct or vicarious reinforcement was examined. Subjects were sixth-grade students of both sexes attending New Mexico Schools. Half of the subjects and models were Chicanos and half were Anglos.
