Arthur Vining Davis Foundations: Secondary Programs (Due Apr 1/Nov 1, each year)

Secondary Education Grants

"A key philanthropic goal of the secondary education program is to fund initiatives with the capacity for expansion or replication to the state, regional or national levels. Requests should target professional development of high school teachers and offer best-in-class training to address a significant issue(s) facing teachers. Efforts to assist either in-service teachers or new teacher preparation are welcome. Encouraging the use of technology to promote improved teaching and outreach efforts to connect colleges and universities with school districts are invited. Curricular improvement should be aligned with relevant standards and include both content and pedagogy. Requests to support well-established programs should have the potential to improve quality significantly."

Grant Amount

Secondary Education requests may range from $25,000 to $200,000.

Eligibility. Institutions eligible for funding include, but are not limited to, public and private colleges and universities, graduate schools of education and freestanding educational organizations.

Spencer Foundation: The New Civics (Due April 29, 2014)

Budgets Over $50,000
"The New Civics initiative is embedded within the broader Foundation belief that cultivating knowledge and new ideas about education will ultimately improve students’ lives and enrich society. The designation “new” refers to an expanded understanding of civic education and its relationship to civic action. Ultimately, we see civic education not simply as a grounding in historical and procedural knowledge of systems of government, but, more broadly, as education, whether in schools or elsewhere, that develops skills, knowledge, and dispositions that lead to informed and reasoned civic action."

Investigators of projects with budgets over $50,000 are asked to submit a preliminary proposal as the first step in the review process. If the Foundation is interested in the project, the Principal Investigator will be invited to submit a full proposal.
Eligibility and Restrictions:

Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs applying for a Research Grant must have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or appropriate experience in an education research-related profession.

The PI must be affiliated with a college, university, research facility, school district, or cultural institution that is willing to serve as the fiscal agent if the grant is awarded. Research Grant proposals from individuals are not eligible.

Proposals are accepted from the U.S. and internationally, however all proposals must be submitted in English and budgets must be proposed in U.S. Dollars.

PIs and Co-PIs may only hold one active research grant from the Spencer Foundation at a time. Simultaneous submissions to Spencer from PIs and Co-PIs are discouraged due to this policy.

Deadlines and Review Process

The next deadline for preliminary proposals is 4:00pm CST, Tuesday, April 29, 2014. This deadline was originally set for January 14, but for a variety of reasons has been delayed until April.
