Fleagle, Matthew (1996). Growing Teachers: A Washington College Builds a Bilingual Teaching Force, Northwest Education. Describes the North Central Educational Service District (Washington) Priority Hispanic Certification program for training bilingual teachers. Begun in 1993, the program finds, trains, and certifies bilingual paraprofessionals and foreign-trained teachers to fill the need for bilingual teachers in central Washington schools. Caudell, Lee Sherman (1996). High Sights: Linking LEP Programs to Systemic Reform Helps Ensure Inclusion, Northwest Education. Briefly describes federal legislation, federally funded programs, and publications supporting the inclusion of limited-English-speaking (LEP) programs in schoolwide programs. Includes a list of regional, state, and national sources of assistance in designing programs for language-minority students. Notes the growing trend toward systemic inclusion of LEP programs. Cazden, Courtney B. (1990). Differential Treatment in New Zealand: Reflections on Research in Minority Education, Teaching and Teacher Education. Differential treatment, unequal participation of children in classroom lessons, and research documenting differential treatment of first-year Maori students are discussed. A description is given of an in-service intervention with New Zealand teachers involving changes in the setting events in which teachers and students interact around beginning literacy tasks. Kwok, Irene (1976). Chinese Folktales for Children. This bilingual text contains ten traditional Chinese folktales which have been rewritten for children. Each story deals with interpersonal relationships and/or stresses the Chinese way of life. Each page of text is given first in English and then in Chinese and is illustrated with a full-page drawing. Pham-Van-Trong; Pham-Thi Ngoc-Dung (1976). National History. Grade 4. This textbook is the last in the national history series developed by the Ministry of Education in Saigon and used in all public schools in Vietnam. The three books in this series have been reprinted in their entirety from the original editions for use in elementary schools in the United States which have Vietnamese students. The grade 4 text contains fifty chapters, which cover Vietnamese history from the beginning to the end of the Trinh rule and the close of the second Ly Dynasty. All illustrations are provided in black and white; therefore, references to colored illustrations in the text should be ignored. Austin Independent School District, TX. Office of Research and Evaluation. (1979). Overlap Study: Number of Students Served by Single and Multiple Compensatory Programs, 1978-1979. Data presented in this document provide a comparison of the students served by major compensatory education programs and illustrate the degree to which these programs provide services to the same students. Included are descriptions of the programs surveyed and a listing of elementary, secondary, and high school campuses on which the programs operate. Kuball, Yazmin Elizabeth; Peck, Sabrina (1997). The Effects of Whole Language Instruction on the Writing Development of Spanish-Speaking and English-Speaking Kindergartners, Bilingual Research Journal. A yearlong study investigated the effects of whole language-based instruction on the writing development of eight Spanish-speaking and eight English-speaking kindergarten children. The writing skills of the Spanish-speaking children developed similarly to those of the English-speaking children, refuting rationales used to place Spanish-speaking students in skill-based programs. Jones-Correa, Michael; Leal, David L. (1996). Becoming "Hispanic": Secondary Panethnic Identification among Latin American-Origin Populations in the United States, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. Data from the Latino National Political Survey were used to examine respondents' use of primary and secondary ethnic identifications. "Hispanic" ethnicity was found to be neither simply instrumental nor cultural but rather a complex phenomenon, differing by many demographic characteristics and by use of panethnicity as a primary or secondary identification. Leong, Charles L. (1976). The Eagle and the Dragon. A Real-Life Chinese-American Story. This volume originated with a desire to supplement the social science curriculum in grades 4 through 8 of the Chinese Bilingual Pilot Program. The volume thus consists of ten chapters, or stories, reflecting the life experiences of one Chinese American which may be used to stimulate discussion and study around the topic of the heritage of Chinese Americans in the United States. Each story is illustrated with a black-and-white drawing.
