Hebert, Yvonne M. (1987). Towards a Conceptualization of Teacher Education for French Language Schools and Programs in Western Canada, Canadian Modern Language Review. A specialist conceptualization of French-language teacher education is proposed for Western Canada where French is a minority language. The discussion addresses the philosophical basis for this approach, the three forms of French language schooling, contributions of bilingual educational methods, and program design. Hynes, Peter (1987). Writing Across the Official Languages: Bilingualism and Rhetoric in the Canadian College, English Quarterly. Presents some points of divergence between current English and French rhetorical theory. Documents a few standard forms of composition in French that are not found in the English. Assesses pedagogies typical of the French tradition and concludes that the theory and pedagogy of the two languages are quite disparate. Diessner, Rhet; And Others (1985). English Fluency via Computers at Yakima Tribal School, Journal of American Indian Education. A project using Apple IIe processing stations and Apple Writer II software increased written English fluency for Native American students in grades 7-12 at the Yakima Tribal School. Thematic maturity did not increase, and students became reluctant to do handwritten work. Recommendations based on findings are presented regarding networking, materials development, instructor training, funding, and bilingual classes. Garcia, Eugene E. (1986). Bilingual Development and the Education of Bilingual Children during Early Childhood, American Journal of Education. Early education of language-minority students has considered linguistic, cognitive, and social attributes of children and schooling contexts. Although far from comprehensive, language-minority education has a broader theoretical and empirical foundation for which present educational practice can be judged and future research can be designed. Ferguson, Laura (1987). Southeast Asian Curriculum Developers: A Link between Teachers, Staff, and Students, Equity and Choice. Crawford, James (1989). Official English Might Sound Good, but It Could Translate into School Trouble, American School Board Journal. The "Official English" movement threatens to undermine guarantees of bilingual services to students with limited proficiency in English. The movement is backed by U.S. English, an offshoot of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Critics claim the real issue is a desire for a stricter immigration policy.
