Ericksen, Charles, Ed. (1981). Bilingual Life in an Anglo Land: Seventeen Hispanic Voices, Perspectives: The Civil Rights Quarterly. Ethnographic examination of the English-dominant culture in the United States and how Hispanics are affected. Through several vignettes, reveals that the civil rights of Hispanics are violated because of cultural differences. Fishman, Joshua A. (1984). Minority Mother Tongues in Education, Prospects: Quarterly Review of Education. The question of whether or not mother-tongue education is the best medium of instruction is examined, using social and cultural criteria instead of the usual academic/cognitive criteria. The real significance of using disadvantaged vernaculars is that such use symbolizes to minority groups a lessening of relative disadvantage. Diaz, Joseph O. Prewitt (1982). The Effects of a Dual Language Reading Program on the Reading Ability of Puerto Rican Students, Reading Psychology. Reveals that Puerto Rican students recently arrived in the United States who participated in a bilingual reading program in Spanish and English performed significantly better than did similar students who did not participate in the program. Chesterfield, Ray; And Others (1983). The Influence of Teachers and Peers on Second Language Acquisition in Bilingual Preschool Programs, TESOL Quarterly. The interaction patterns of eleven Spanish-speaking preschool children in two bilingual programs were observed for one year. In predominantly English-speaking classrooms, greater English proficiency was related to English use with peers. In prevalently Spanish-speaking classes, English proficiency was more related to interaction in English with teachers. Discusses approaches for teaching English to students who speak other languages and suggests that the bilingual/bicultural approach provides the most benefits. Fillmore, Lily Wong (1982). Language Minority Students and School Participation: What Kind of English is Needed?, Journal of Education. Discusses results of research on the comprehension/production of oral and written language in a classroom.
