Chesterfield, Ray A.; Chesterfield, Kathleen Barrows (1985). "Hoja's with the H": Spontaneous Peer Teaching in Bilingual Classrooms, Bilingual Review. Presents the instructional episodes engaged in by bilingual first graders. Findings indicate that peer instruction occurred frequently and that proficiency in English was not a determining factor in the language choices made by individual students. Sondergaard, Bent; Byram, Michael (1986). Pedagogical Problems and Symbolic Values in the Language Curriculum–The Case of the German Minority in Denmark, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Discusses the role played by German schools in Denmark in the maintenance of the minority's identity and describes those constraints and tensions which are due to the symbolic value of German. The interrelationship of pedagogical problems and potential solutions with the perceptions fundamental to the minority group's identity are highlighted. Harrison, Barbara (1986). Manokotak: A Study of School Adaptation, Anthropology and Education Quarterly. Presents results of a case study of a school in Manokotak, Alaska, a Yup'ik Eskimo community, and describes the cultural gap between the school and the minority community. Adaptations in the school evolved over time, and the direction of change was toward integration of the process of schooling into the culture of the local community. N. C.. T. T. h (1985). The Swann Report: Education for All?, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. The National Council for Mother Tongue Teaching presents its response to the Swann Report, with particular reference to the report's discussion of the role of ethnic minority languages in Great Britain. The Council concludes that the thinking of the Swann Report is far behind that of current research and educational trends. Yuen, Olive (1989). Bilingual Citizenship Programmes: A Unique Opportunity, TESL Talk. Summarizes five case studies in which students were interviewed taking a Canadian citizenship course. The studies focused on why the students attended a bilingual citizenship class. The subjects' responses indicated that bilingual classes were unique and ideal places to prepare not only for citizenship hearings but also for active community participation in Canada. Bourne, Jill (1990). Local Authority Provision for Bilingual Pupils: ESL, Bilingual Support and Community Languages Teaching, Educational Research. A national survey of English and Welsh local education authorities conducted from 1985-1988 found that programs for bilingual students were still seen largely in terms of English language provision. However, a significant increase in teaching in pupils' native language within the curriculum had also taken place. Glenn, Charles L. (1987). The New Common School, Phi Delta Kappan. Horace Mann's goal of creating a common school that brings our society's children together in mutual respect and common learning need not be frustrated by residential segregation and geographical separation of the haves and have-nots. Massachusetts' new common school vision boasts a Metro Program for minority students, 80 magnet schools, and numerous two-way bilingual schools. Hornberger, Nancy H. (1989). Continua of Biliteracy, Review of Educational Research. A framework for understanding biliteracy is proposed. It is argued that biliteracy is best understood as a series of interrelated continua defining the contexts, individual development, and media of biliteracy. The nine continua identified are discussed, and their implications for research and teaching are considered. Ferguson, Laura (1986). A Fair Share: Opening Doors for the Gifted Bilingual Student, Equity and Choice. A program for gifted Hispanic children in the Worcester, Massachusetts, public schools is designed to increase participants' exposure to cultural and community resources, encourage creativity and imagination, and foster language and literacy skills. Potential participants are identified by bilingual teachers and by peer, parent, and self-assessments. Warnock, Mairi; Boss, Marvin W. (1987). Auditory Discrimination and Auditory Memory as Predictors of Academic Success, Canadian Journal for Exceptional Children. Eighty fourth-graders enrolled in an English/French bilingual program in Canada were administered an auditory skills battery of six tests to measure auditory discrimination and short-term auditory memory. It was concluded that a relationship exists between certain auditory perceptual abilities and school achievement independent of cognitive abilities. Dorros, Arthur (1986). I Thought Banana Was English, Teachers and Writers Magazine.
