Skinner, David C. (1985). Access to Meaning: The Anatomy of the Language/Learning Connection, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Examines assumptions about second language acquisition by means of the anatomical model described in Part 1 of the study (see vol. 6, no. 2 of this journal). The analysis shows that the assumptions are rooted in the Direct Method and that they retard learning. Implications for second language instruction are noted. Valdivieso, Rafael (1986). Hispanics and Schools: A New Perspective, Educational Horizons. Hispanic students who are learning and achieving well in certain kinds of schools are succeeding not because these schools have special policies for them but because the way the schools are organized helps to resolve some of the problems of Hispanics–problems that generally are not well understood. Rist, Marilee C. (1987). This Immigrant Wave Will Test Your Schools as Never Before, Executive Educator. About 2.5 million immigrant students in US schools between the ages of 5 and 14 have limited English proficiency. Ways of meeting these students' educational and social needs are outlined with examples from schools having successful special programs. The importance of being flexible and looking for alternatives as well as identifying the student's individual educational needs are stressed.
