Ramirez, Arnulfo G.; Politzer, Robert L. (1975). Development of Spanish/English Bilingualism in a Dominant Spanish Speaking Environment, Atisbos: Journal of Chicano Research. A Spanish/English oral-proficiency test battery was administered to 40 Spanish-surnamed pupils equally divided by sex at grade levels 1, 3, 5, and 7. Cohen, Andrew D. (1975). Bilingual Schooling and Spanish Language Maintenance: An Experimental Analysis, Bilingual Review. A study is reported in which 14 bilingually schooled and 16 conventionally schooled Mexican-American children and their parents were subjects of research over a two-year period. The bilingual program students were found to be using Spanish more after several years and continued this pattern over time. Thomas, Piri (1973). Puerto Ricans in the Promised Land, Civil Rights Digest. An account of the hearing on Puerto Rican problems held by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in New York City on Feb 14 and 15, 1972 which provides not only a description of the hearing but is also interspersed with recollections by Mr. Thomas of his experience of growing up in the New York barrio. Erickson, Frederick (1974). The Politics of Speaking, Notes From Workshop Center for Open Education. If first language maintenance is considered to be a goal of bilingual-bicultural educational programs, then alternative evaluation strategies are called for that will examine the "politics of speaking" in terms of determining the extent to which the informal or "hidden" curriculum and social organization of the program was inadvertently discouraging students from using their first language despite the best intentions of staff and the students themselves. Engle, Patricia Lee (1975). Language Medium in Early School Years for Minority Language Groups, Review of Educational Research. Strasheim, Lorraine A. (1975). We're All Ethnics: "Hyphenated" Americans, "Professional" Ethnics, and Ethnics "By Attraction", Modern Language Journal. A certain stigma is attached to the term "bilingual." Defining all Americans as ethnics shows that it is not un-American to be bilingual. Hahn, Joyce; Dunstan, Virginia (1975). The Child's Whole World: A Bilingual Preschool That Includes Parent Training in the Home, Young Children. Describes a home-based parent education component of a bilingual, bicultural preschool program which involves parents in the decision-making process concerning their child's education and has effected a language and cultural exchange between the Anglo and Spanish-speaking communities. Carranza, Michael A.; Ryan, Ellen Bouchard (1975). Evaluative Reactions of Bilingual Anglo and Mexican American Adolescents Toward Speakers of English and Spanish, Linguistics. A study is reported in which Mexican-American and Anglo adolescents rated the personalities of sixteen speakers representing four language categories: English-Home, Spanish-Home, English-School, and Spanish-School. The study sought information about the Mexican-American bilingual adolescent and his reactions to his position as a bilingual.
