(1995). Letting Children Take the Lead in Class, Educational Leadership. Using play learning and real-world problem solving, an alternative Arizona program is cultivating confidence and love of learning in bilingual first-graders. Children learn by using their own language (Spanish), learning styles, and thought processes. Besides problem-solving, the "cube train" teaches estimation, number relationships, patterns, and data collection and analysis. (1994). Literacy in Pacific Islands Languages in New Zealand Schools, Journal of Reading. Discusses the dramatic demographic changes which have profoundly altered the reading programs in many New Zealand schools. Notes that more than a thousand schools and preschools teach bilingually or run immersion programs in a language other than English (such as Maori or Samoan). (1990). Language and Identity in the Education of Boston-Area Khmer, Anthropology and Education Quarterly. The author finds the Khmer refugee parents of children in Boston area schools to be relatively uninterested in the question of their children's education, following from a fatalistic outlook that distinguishes them from other Southeast Asian refugees, whose children are urged to succeed against all odds. (1994). The Use of Language Functions in Mathematical Group Games. Teacher Insights, Bilingual Research Journal. Six group games were introduced into a second-grade bilingual classroom. Children's talk during each game was classified using a modification of Dyson's five language functions (representational, directive, heuristic, personal, and interactional). (1990). Program at St. Olaf College Offers Students Incentives to Make Foreign Languages More than a Requirement, Chronicle of Higher Education. The innovative program enables students to enroll, for additional academic credit, in regular disciplinary courses which have supplementary readings and class meetings in a foreign language. Currently 25 professors are experimenting with the special courses and 45 students are enrolled in the foreign language tracks of 4 courses. Examines gendered aspects of literacy in two bilingual primary classrooms in a working-class Latino community. Centers on values that are associated with literacy in each room and the gendering of those values through specific classroom practices, with attention to gendered aspects of literacy tasks, texts that were written and read, and the talk that structured participants' interactions. To help young Japanese students adjust to American schooling, a suburban Illinois elementary school district developed a bilingual English Language Acceleration Program. Its goals are facilitating English language mastery, easing students' transition to American culture, and emphasizing content area skills.
