Macnamara, John (1975). Comparison between First and Second Language Learning. Working Papers on Bilingualism, No. 7. The thesis of the paper is that the process of learning a second language, if successful, is the same as that of learning a first one. The paper discusses various objections that have been raised against this thesis, and it discusses the considerable body of research which explores it. It examines the appropriateness of the research data for throwing light on the validity of the thesis. Valbuena, Felix M.; And Others (1979). Spanish Language Arts Enrichment Guide. This Spanish language arts enrichment guide for grades K-5 was produced for use in Detroit, Michigan, public schools. The guide is divided into three parts: (1) language development for grades K-1; (2) reading readiness, focusing on word recognition and comprehension, for grades K-1 and 2-3; and (3) cultural activities for grades K-5. The bilingual guide presents lists of classroom activities and techniques which are correlated to the development of specific language arts skills. A section on cultural activities provides various games, songs, poems, dances, and stories for use in the enhancement of students' Spanish language ability. Teacher's Edition). This teacher's guide corresponds to the text that is the first of a series of four units concerning language skills for Spanish speakers of limited English-speaking ability in grades 6-9. The text includes a variety of learning experiences designed to develop competence in the student's cognitive and affective skills derived from the following basic areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher's text is composed of 16 units, each containing the following components: (1) concepts, (2) objectives, (3) resources, (4) activities, and (5) evaluation. The concepts section states the key ideas of the unit. The objectives are stated in behavioral terms that specify some observable or measurable behavior the student is expected to demonstrate at the end of the unit. The resource section contains a suggested list of audio-visual or manipulative materials recommended in teaching certain units. The activities section embodies a variety of instructional activities suggested for consideration in preparing lesson plans. The evaluation section includes a test designed to measure the student's mastery of the concepts taught. This is the third and last unit in a series designed to provide the Spanish-speaking child with a complete language arts and reading program for grades 1-3. It focuses on the development of decoding, encoding, comprehension, and interpretation skills. This third grade workbook, one component of the language arts unit, contains 22 chapters with exercises and a 4-page glossary. Gorena, Minerva, Comp. (1972). Information and Materials to Teach the Cultural Heritage of the Mexican American Child. Information in this resource guide responded to teacher requests for supplemental historical and cultural classroom materials. The bilingual program for which this guide was designed has served schools in 3 different locales: a center-city area composed of housing projects and some individually owned homes, a suburban near-rural neighborhood of the same city, and a rural Central Texas town. Major topics were a historical background; an overview of Mexico; places to see; games; dances; legends, fables, and stories; and units for teaching Mexican American cultural heritage. This text is the first of a series of four units concerning language skills for Spanish speakers of limited English-speaking ability in grades 6-9. The text includes a variety of learning experiences designed to develop competence in the student's cognitive and affective skills derived from the following basic areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on the first three. The text/workbook contains 16 units. Each unit is composed of three parts, each of which concentrates on a different area of language skills. These parts of the unit are arranged in the following order: oral communication, reading, and structure. The oral communication section is aimed at enriching the student's vocabulary and making self-expression more precise and effective. The reading section provides the student with low level, high interest reading selections that deal with the Hispanic cultures and peoples in the United States. The structure section emphasizes the practical application of traditional grammar concepts. Rendon, Rene (1973). Learning Achievement Packages in Social Studies. Procedimientos para Manejar. Mantenimiento del Automovil. Llantas. (Procedures for Driving. Maintenance of an Automobile. Tires.). This publication presents three suggested social studies curriculum units designed for the bilingual Spanish-English classroom, but which would also be useful in advanced Spanish language classes for English speakers. The units, developed for grades 7-11, are entitled, "Procedures for Driving,""Maintenance of an Automobile," and "Tires," and are to be used for driver education instruction.
