Thayer, Frank D., Jr. (1990). Using Semantic Differential to Evaluate Courses, Journalism Educator. Uses the semantic differential method to survey student attitudes toward a new "writing for print media" course in New Mexico State University's journalism department. Finds that students gained confidence in themselves and their professional potential when exposed to highly professional requirements. Shows that this longitudinal method can realistically assess how well courses are achieving their intended goals. Tempest, Phyllis; Skipper, Betty (1988). Norms for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children–Revised for Navajo Indians, Diagnostique. Norms were developed for Navajo Indian students for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised, by sampling 16 percent of the Navajo school population from first through eighth grade in 8 schools in McKinley County, New Mexico. The norms, based on 539 students, help to separate cultural and language differences from learning difficulties. Morgan, Phyllis T.; Rodriguez, Roy C. (1988). Home School Parents: A Rural Survey, Rural Educator. Reports on a survey of parental opinions and attitudes toward schooling among 40 rural and small-town New Mexico families, all Anglo, involved in home schooling. Concludes that these parents were not greatly dissatisfied with public education, but mainly sought to shelter their children from the negative influences of other children and society. Stover, Del (1989). Edward Ortiz, Executive Educator. Describes a retiring superintendent's efforts to dismantle factory-style schooling and empower teachers. The Santa Fe (New Mexico) Schools' teacher/principal management teams have already instituted interdisciplinary teaching and ungraded, multi-age elementary classes. Dormody, Thomas J.; Seevers, Brenda S. (1994). Participation of FFA Members in Leadership Development Activities: A Tri-State Study. [and] 4-H Youth Participation in Leadership Development Activities: A Tri-State Study, Journal of Agricultural Education. Two studies were undertaken to determine the extent to which 1992-93 Future Farmers of America (FFA; n=266) and 4-H members (n=234) in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico participated in leadership development activities. Over 100 FFA members participated in 12 leadership activities, and over 100 senior 4-H members participated in 10 leadership activities. Luchini, Ingrid (1988). Ein Senior-High-Deutschklub, der voll zum Programm gehoert (A Senior High German Club that Belongs Entirely within the German Program), Unterrichtspraxis. The German Club at Mayfield High School (New Mexico) plays an integral role in the school's German program. The "co-curricular" club motivates students with such activities as yearbook preparation; dance, choral, and dramatic recitals; video and Christmas parties; and picnics. A University of New Mexico medical school study investigated opinions of faculty and students concerning student unethical behavior; discrepancies between the two groups' perceptions; prevalence of such behavior, as estimated by faculty and students; and policy and procedures concerning instances of unethical student behavior. Beene, LynnDianne; Sanders, Scott P. (1987). Writing across the English Department, WPA: Writing Program Administration. Describes the University of New Mexico's undergraduate writing program which provides a concentration in professional writing, offering students vocational and humanistic preparation by teaching skills and critically examining the contexts of their writing. Concludes that the English curriculum should accept the complementary importance of writing and literature. Bodine, John J. (1988). The Taos Blue Lake Ceremony, American Indian Quarterly. Describes the Blue Lake Ceremony of the Taos Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. Reproduces the 1906 account of the ceremony by anthropologist Matilda Coxe Stevenson and notes modern verification and change. Discusses the importance of this annual August pilgrimage and initiation rite to the preservation of Taos culture. Willard, William (1988). The Plumed Serpent and the Red Atlantis, WICAZO SA Review. Examines work of author D.H. Lawrence and John Collier, later Bureau of Indian Affairs Commissioner, during 1920s when they stayed as Mabel Dodge Luhan's guests in Taos, New Mexico. Examines their perceptions of Pueblo Indian culture, federal-Indian relationship, and Indian influences on Lawrence's and Collier's work. Fullerton, Donna (1995). Partners in Learning, Computing Teacher. The Partners in Learning Take Home Computer Program, which began in New Mexico in 1989 to extend the learning environment into the home, distributes 200 computers to families. Results of the program include a 90% rise in parent to school contact; parental involvement in schoolwork; and increases in reading and math scores. Colombo, Louis J.; And Others (1990). Counting Heads, American School Board Journal. Describes Albuquerque (New Mexico) Public Schools' development of a model to forecast enrollment growth. Recommendations include studying local demographics, seeking clues to future development, examining the age of neighborhoods, adding up rental property, and developing strong professional relationships with city planners, real estate developers, and economic forecasters. May, Philip A. (1987). Suicide and Self-Destruction among American Indian Youths, American Indian and Alaska Native Mental Health Research.
