Sullivan, Michael; And Others (1994). High-Tech Harvest, Executive Educator. During the 1992-93 school year, Southwest Educational Development Laboratory conducted study of rural schools in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas that were using one kind of telecommunications technology: full-motion interactive video. Many schools were at risk of being closed because they could not provide education comparable to that available in larger, less isolated schools. Six successful programs are described. Manning, Thurston E. (1993). Territorial Imperatives, NCA Quarterly. Discusses the history of the North Central Association, focusing on how the "North Central" region earned its name and achieved its present size and shape, including Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Mexico. Offers quotes about membership criteria from speakers at association meetings in the early 1900s. Seevers, Brenda; Dormody, Thomas J. (1994). Predicting Youth Life Leadership Skills Development among Senior 4-H Members: A Tri-State Study, Journal of Agricultural Education. Responses from 228 of 400 4-H participants in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico revealed a 12.6% variance in scores, showing that participation in leadership activities positively affected youth leadership life skills development. Minority and female participants generally had higher scores. Skill development was also related to achievement expectancy. De Leon, Jozi; Cole, Jack (1994). Service Delivery to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Students in Rural School Districts, Rural Special Education Quarterly. Survey responses of 60 rural New Mexico special education directors address availability of programs that simultaneously meet cultural, communication, and disability needs of diverse student populations; training of personnel in these programs; and whether educational diagnosticians and speech language pathologists accommodate language and cultural factors. Recommends cross-training of rural special educators and English-as-a-Second-Language teachers. Duryea, Elias L.; Semark, Larry (1994). Four Years of Infusing Preventive Health Behavior Education into an Isolated Hispanic School, Rural Educator. A cohort of 29 students in a small rural New Mexico school completed a self-report measure of behavioral intention toward alcohol and drug use in 7th and 11th grades. During the four years between measures, students received intensive education about resisting pro-drug-use pressures. Varela, Maria (1994). Economic "Growth" vs. "Development" of Rural Communities: It Means the Difference between Local and Outside Control, Workbook. Economic growth increases the amount of money in a community but does not increase the community's capacity to steer its own direction as economic development can. The accomplishments of Rio Arriba County (New Mexico) offer a rare example of successful economic development. Phelan, Sharon; And Others (1993). Teaching Medical Dictation: Results of a Course for Medical Students, Teaching and Learning in Medicine. The University of New Mexico hospital supported development and implementation of a brief course for medical students in medical dictation. Dictations of hospital discharge summaries prepared by the participants were compared with those done by prior graduates of the institution. Greer, Sandy (1994). Contemporary Imagemaker Expressing Vision, Winds of Change. Profiles the career of Larry McNeil, Tlingit photographer and professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As with his own work, McNeil teaches his students that the fundamental task of image making is to raise questions concerning the portrayal of contemporary Native Americans. Kallstrom, Scott (1995). Faith in Education, Purdue Alumnus. Introduces Faith Smith, president of Native American Educational Services (NAES) College in Chicago. Discusses community-based and action-oriented approaches to education followed on the central campus and satellite campuses in Montana, New Mexico, Minneapolis, and Wisconsin. Phelan, Sharon; And Others (1993). Evaluation of the Noncognitive Professional Traits of Medical Students, Academic Medicine. A University of New Mexico medical school program to evaluate students having difficulty with noncognitive professional traits (responsibility, reliability, maturity, self-assessment, communication, honesty, integrity, respect for patients and peers) has identified 10 students with difficulties and provided interventions and remediation over a 4-year period. Testi, Andrea R.; Bordeianu, Sever (1993). Staff Exchange in Reference Services, RSR Reference Services Review. Discusses problems and opportunities encountered in implementing staff exchange programs among reference departments of a multibranch academic library, based on experiences at the University of New Mexico. Highlights include communication; collaboration; uniformity of service; implementation criteria; goals; training; workloads and scheduling; and evaluations. Smith, Melinda (1993). Some School-Based Violence Prevention Strategies, NASSP Bulletin. Mediation and conflict resolution have numerous school applications. School mediation programs create new forms for social interaction in which fighting and violence are unacceptable methods of resolving differences. The New Mexico Center for Dispute Resolution has successfully applied mediation techniques to gang disputes, parent-child impasses, and school/community disputes. Wagner, Tony (1996). Seeking Common Ground: Goal-Setting with All Constituencies, Educational Leadership. In 1994, the Institute for Responsive Education launched the Responsive Schools Project (involving 14 schools in Las Cruces, New Mexico; Flambeau, Wisconsin; Harts, West Virginia; and Chicago) to ask parents, teachers, administrators, and high-school students about educational reform goals. Thorn, Todd F.; And Others (1994). A Process for Developing Wilderness User Education Plans, Journal of Environmental Education. Describes the process used to develop a wilderness education plan for the Pecos Wilderness in northern New Mexico. The process comprised four general steps: (1) collect background information, (2) identify wilderness education issues; (3) analyze the wilderness education issues; and (4) develop general management recommendations. Boverie, Patricia E.; Blackwell, Peggy J. (1994). The Restructuring of a College of Education: A Case Study, School Organisation.
