De Leon, Jozi; Argus-Calvo, Beverley; Medina, Catherine (1997). A Model Project for Identifying Rural Gifted and Talented Students in the Visual Arts, Rural Special Education Quarterly. A rural New Mexico project identifies gifted Hispanic and Native American children in the visual arts. Committees of parents, teachers, artists, and administrators use identification procedures sensitive to cultural, linguistic, and ethnic differences and community ethnic identity. Program elements include culturally relevant differentiated curriculum, cross-cultural sharing between sites, enhancement of local arts, and portfolio assessment. Palma, Gloria M; And Others (1993). Curriculum for Individuals with a Developmental Disability: An Overview, Rural Special Education Quarterly. A functional curriculum for individuals who are developmentally disabled was developed at Tohatchi Special Education and Training Center, located within the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. The curriculum guide includes a contextual framework, extensive background information, and objectives for fine- and gross-motor and language and communication development. Wallerstein, Nina (1993). Empowerment and Health: The Theory and Practice of Community Change, Community Development Journal. Empowerment as social action addresses lack of control by enhancing participation in community action. An alcohol and substance abuse prevention program for New Mexico adolescents used Freire's problem posing and critical thinking philosophy and methods to empower young people to change their health behavior. Lamarine, Roland J. (1993). A Pilot Study of Sources of Information and Substance Use Patterns among Selected American Indian High School Seniors, Journal of American Indian Education. A survey of 168 American Indian (primarily Navajo) high school seniors in New Mexico examined experiences with alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs; sources of information about these substances; and student attitudes, perceptions of risk, perceptions of parent attitudes, and reasons for not using. Duryea, Elias J.; Mesrian, Parvin; Semark, Larry; West, Carolyn (1997). Sexual Behavior and Perceptions of Young Women in a Rural Southwest School, Rural Educator. Risk factors associated with teenage pregnancy were studied among 95 Hispanic, Native American, and White ninth-grade females at a rural New Mexico high school. All respondents, regardless of ethnicity, reported moderate levels of health-compromising behaviors such as alcohol use, poor communication with parents regarding sex, and a false sense of sexual invulnerability. C de Baca, Mary Rose; And Others (1991). Santo Domingo School: A Rural Schoolwide Project Success, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis. The schoolwide project option of the 1988 Hawkins Stafford Amendments to Chapter 1 allowed a rural school serving a disadvantaged Native American population to restructure its compensatory and regular education services. Santo Domingo school (New Mexico) illustrates the ways modifications of federal law and policy benefit children. Torres, Robert M.; Dormody, Thomas J. (1997). FFA Advisors' Educational Exposure to, Use of, and Attitude toward the Program of Activities, Journal of Agricultural Education. Responses from 48 of 70 secondary teacher advisors of Future Farmers of America (FFA) in New Mexico showed that 50% had been exposed to the Program of Activities (POA) as FFA members; state mandates influenced their use of POA; and all involved students in planning and implementing activities, but only 67% involved students in evaluating them. Hadfield, Oakley D. (1992). Improving Elementary Teacher Performance and Confidence in Mathematics: A Successful Rural Small School Inservice, Journal of Rural and Small Schools. Describes a summer mathematics inservice workshop for 39 elementary teachers from rural, small schools throughout New Mexico. Focused on minority participation, hands-on activities, and improvement of attitude towards the teaching of mathematics. Posttests revealed improvement in knowledge of manipulative use, confidence in use of manipulatives, and mathematics anxiety. Rosen, Carol (1990). Rethinking Southern Tiwa: The Geometry of a Triple-Agreement Language, Language. New conclusions emerge about Southern Tiwa, a Tanoan language of New Mexico, from a morphoyntactic analysis of the language, including nouns occur as serial predicates; nouns can license an argument in the role of possessor; and the verb agrees with all and only final terms. Baker, D. (1993). From Old Wisdom to Future Trends, Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness. This article discusses educational services and programs provided by the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped. The school provides free appropriate education for children with visual impairments within an array of service models and environments, protects the rights of students with handicaps and their parents, and makes technical aids, equipment, and trained personnel available. Stokrocki, Mary; Yazzie, Elmer (1997). A Microethnographic Study of a Navajo Art Teacher in a Boarding School: Balancing Traditional and Aesthetic Values in Art Education, Canadian Review of Art Education: Research and Issues. Describes, analyzes, and interprets the cultural values communicated by a Navajo art teacher in a K-12 boarding school in New Mexico. Much of the Navajo world view is expressed through content, instruction, and demonstration. This view emphasizes spirituality, harmonious living, and the process of seeing and drawing as a way of honoring and preserving relationships. Kirchoff, Rebecca (1997). U.S. Department of Education Character Education Projects, Social Studies Review. Briefly summarizes 12 of the federally funded state projects supporting character education. Discusses the funding and governing authority for these grants and provides a contact number for each. Participating states include California, Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington. Sabo, Kenneth E.; Hamilton, Wendy V. (1997). 4-H Shooting Sports Hits the Mark with Youth-at-Risk, Journal of Extension. A 4-H program in a public housing project in New Mexico involved at-risk youth in activities such as archery and other shooting sports. Bray, Judy (1992). RE:Learning and State Policy Change, NASSP Bulletin. In 1988-89, six states (Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island) made a five-year commitment to RE:Learning, a school development project aimed at helping students use their minds well. The key to systemwide change is shifting state expectations and waiving government policies hindering reform.
