Stewart, Thomas J.; And Others (1980). Community of Origin of Spouse and Physician Location in Two Southwestern States, Journal of Medical Education. A study is reported that examines the influence of rural or urban backgrounds on physicians and their spouses in their choices of location for practicing medicine. Calvert, Laura D. (1963). Notes on the Peace Corps Language Training Program, The Modern Language Journal. Peace Corps language training in Spanish at the University of New Mexico is described. Glennen, Robert E.; Baxley, Dan M. (1985). Reduction of Attrition Through Intrusive Advising, NASPA Journal. Examines the effects of an intrusive advising program on the attrition rate of college freshmen and sophomores. Identifies reasons students drop out and outlines an advising program used at Western New Mexico University. Results showed the intrusive advising program to be effective in reducing attrition rates. And Others; Wiese, William H. (1979). Augmentation of Clinical Services in Rural Areas by Health Sciences Students, Journal of Medical Education. Over a five-year period 230 senior-level University of New Mexico students in medicine, nursing, and pharmacy served in clinics in rural communities as part of Project Porvenir. Suina-Lowery, Carletta (1979). Bilingual Education and the Pueblo Indians, Journal of American Indian Education. Federal and state bilingual education legislation since 1923 has not enhanced the education of Pueblo Indian children in New Mexico. Lacking public school control, Pueblo Indians have resisted the establishment of bilingual education programs for their children. Chilton, Lance A. (1982). School Health for Medical Students, Journal of Medical Education. A program at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine that involves medical students in a school health program is described. The University of New Mexico Health Science Center offers an elective, weekly clinical experience for preclinical medical students, senior nursing students, and senior pharmacy students at a prison facility in need of medical services. Describes an investigation of the proportions of Dona Ana County, New Mexico, social service agencies that have translated into Spanish the forms needed by consumers during the contracting phase of the social service cycle. Rodrigues, Raymond J. (1981). A Longitudinal Study of Bilingual English Syntax, Aztlan–International Journal of Chicano Studies Research. Compares 1973 and 1978 studies of the English syntactic proficiency of bilingual Mexican-American fourth- and ninth-grade Spanish/English speakers in Las Vegas (New Mexico). A teacher education program implemented by Eastern New Mexico University helps prepare future teachers in the use of multicultural strategies.
