Indicates that Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, and Wyoming do not have legislated or voluntary state programs. Scott, Patrick B. (1983). Mathematics Achievement Test Scores of American Indian and Anglo Students: A Comparison, Journal of American Indian Education. Reports a preliminary study of possible differences in the performance in mathematics between American Indian Pueblo and Anglos. Sample evaluated consisted of 65 Pueblos and 59 Anglos that excluded highest and lowest scores on Form B of the College Qualification Tests from Fall 1977 to Spring 1981 at the University of New Mexico. Moore-West, Maggi; And Others (1983). Reduced Stress in Medical Education: An Outcome of Altered Learning Environment, Journal of Research and Development in Education. An experimental curricular track (Primary Care Curriculum) was instituted at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine to educate more students to enter rural primary care and to better develop skills in life-long, self-motivated learning. A study comparing characteristics and results of the Primary Care Curriculum and of a conventional curricular track is reported. King, Linda Sue (1982). Professional Preparation: Multicultural Health Beliefs in Action, Health Education (Washington D.C.). A course dealing with the health beliefs of Hispanics, American Indians, and Anglo Americans was developed at the University of New Mexico. Briggs, Charles L. (1984). Learning How to Ask: Native Metacommunicative Competence and the Incompetence of Fieldworkers, Language in Society. Gives an analysis of the way in which Spanish speakers in rural New Mexico gain metacommunicative competence. Suggests that native metacommunicative routines provide a rich source of sociolinguistic and social-cultural data and that awareness of these repertoires can assist field workers in using interviews more appropriately and effectively. Semken, Steven C. (1992). Looking after the Land: The Navajo Dryland Environments Laboratory Researches the Environmental Needs of the Navajo Nation, Tribal College: Journal of American Indian Higher Education. Describes the formation and operations of the Navajo Dryland Environments Laboratory (NDEL). NDEL, established by the Waste-Management Education and Research Consortium of New Mexico on the campus of Navajo Community College, focuses on environmental geology, hydrology, and resource management of the Colorado Plateau drylands. Levine, Elaine (1983). A Training Model That Stresses the Dynamic Dimensions of Counseling, Personnel and Guidance Journal. Describes a training method that provides a systematic, experiential way of teaching both core conditions and their appropriate use according to dynamic phases of the counseling relationship. The model is part of the Master's curriculum in counseling at New Mexico State University, and has been shown to be effective. Holburn, C. Steve (1982). Impact of a Legal Advocacy Program on Services in a State Residential Facility, Mental Retardation. The impact of a unique, federally funded legal advocacy system on service delivery within a New Mexico state residential care facility for the mentally retarded is examined. Judicial attempts to improve institutional service provision are discussed. Baca, Milton L.; Palmer, Gregory (1985). Cable TV: A Valuable Learning Resource, NASSP Bulletin. Valley High School, Albuquerque, New Mexico, uses cable television in many ways. The educational access channels aid in classroom instruction, students take part in national and local teleconferences, the public access channel is used to tell the community about the school, and students learn to use video equipment. Laroche, Jacques M. (1985). Undergraduate Internship in Conversation, Foreign Language Annals. Describes the undergraduate internship in conversation at New Mexico State University, a course which attempts to improve the oral communication of basic language classes. The course offers undergraduates opportunities to hold conversations with more advanced undergraduates in weekly meetings.
