Wooden, Sharon L.; Baptiste, Nancy (1996). A Self-Concept Development Course for Adults: "It's My Turn!", Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education. Delineates the need for and describes an experiential course on self-concept development for preservice teachers in the early childhood Associate Degree program at New Mexico State University. Notes that activities designed for nontraditional adult learners focus on development of self-knowledge, esteem, and ideals through self assessment and reflection in a positive, nonthreatening environment. Farmer, Stephen (1996). Speech-Language Pathology Education and Training for Rural Areas: A State and University "Goodness of Fit" Model, Rural Special Education Quarterly. A three-year summers-only master of arts degree program in speech language pathology (SLP) at New Mexico State University allows speech language pathologists working in rural schools to obtain their master's degree and fulfill state waiver requirements. Harris, Mary B.; And Others (1988). The Checkerboard Cardiovascular Curriculum: A Culturally Oriented Program, Journal of School Health. Pilot-testing of a cardiovascular health education curriculum with 218 American Indian and Hispanic fifth graders in rural New Mexico noted significant increases in knowledge about the cardiovascular system, exercise, nutrition, obesity, tobacco use, and habit change, suggesting that the culturally oriented program may help promote a healthy lifestyle. Macaranas-Sittler, Natividad; Stapleton, Rosalind (1988). Effects of Parenting Classes on Anxiety Reduction in Gifted Children, Creative Child and Adult Quarterly. To determine whether increased parental understanding of their gifted children would facilitate adjustment and reduce the children's anxiety, parents of 10 gifted children in a New Mexico elementary school participated in parenting classes. Osborne, A. Barry (1989). Insiders and Outsiders: Cultural Membership and the Micropolitics of Education among the Zuni, Anthropology and Education Quarterly. Outlines power relationships that exist in the schools of a small-scale, Zuni (New Mexico) community. Describes complex set of insider-outsider relationships, analyzes their effects, and provides support for McDermott's notion of collusion. Mitchell, Bruce M. (1985). Multicultural Education: A Viable Component of American Education?, Educational Research Quarterly. Results are summarized of a questionnaire, completed for 48 of the 50 United States, concerning multicultural education. (New Mexico and Virginia are not included.) Questions include: the existence of a state-level program; a responsible person; multicultural certification requirements; and screening of textbooks and curriculum for racism or sexism. Brubaker, C. William (1986). Specifications for the Design of the School Site, CEFP Journal. The school site design is now seen as part of community planning. Recreational, cultural, social, and educational facilities for adults are included in educational specifications. Three illustrations and two photographs demonstrated attractive school sites. Site area requirements for a new high school in Santa Fe, New Mexico are summarized. Krueger, Joline Gutierrez (1995). Forever a Yearbook Editor, Communication: Journalism Education Today. Discusses, through a first-person narrative, the life of a reporter who began her career as a high school yearbook editor. Chronicles her attempts to find a college major before committing to a journalism degree from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. Schlichter, Carol L.; And Others (1988). Extending Talents Unlimited to Secondary Schools, Educational Leadership. "Talents Unlimited," a research-based model for teaching thinking at the elementary level, has proven to be an effective model for the secondary level as well at schools in New Mexico, Arkansas, and Alabama. The program emphasizes strategies that help teachers integrate practice in thinking skills with academic content. Anderson, Robert A.; And Others (1985). Can Community Colleges Offer Opportunity and Excellence?, Community and Junior College Journal. Four community college presidents (i.e., Robert A. Anderson, New Mexico Junior College; Flora Mancuso Edwards, Hostos Community College (NY); D. Kent Sharples, Horry-Georgetown Technical College (SC); and George B. Vaughan, Piedmont Virginia Community College) offer explanations of how community colleges can maintain open-door admissions, provide an excellent education, and still thrive. Olson, Pamela N.; Olson, Geraldine I. (1986). Economic Well-Being of Elderly Families and Individuals: An Alternative Measure, Home Economics Research Journal. Seventy-five elderly residents of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, were interviewed concerning their money and nonmoney economic resources. Resource distribution and adequacy were measured. Results indicated that the current federal funding level of programs for the elderly results in reduction, but not elimination, of elderly families in poverty. Matern, Lavonne; Ward, Annette (1989). Integrating the Basics into Clothing and Textiles Curricula, Illinois Teacher of Home Economics. Results of a study indicated that home economics teachers in New Mexico place a strong emphasis on clothing construction in the curriculum. It is important that other aspects of clothing and textiles be taught lest they be lost as classes are eliminated. Pasterczyk, Catherine E. (1986). Involvement in Curriculum Change, College and Research Libraries. A survey of heads of collection development in 104 academic libraries was conducted to determine usefulness of information sources on curriculum change for selectors and extent of library involvement in planning such changes.
