Jaeger, Elizabeth L.; Pearson, P. David (2017). The Integration of Common Core and Response to Intervention: Supporting Vulnerable Readers in a Time of Sophisticated Standards, Educational Forum. The Common Core State Standards and Response to Intervention are significant contemporary educational initiatives that have emerged largely in isolation from one another. We argue that an integration of these initiatives is beneficial. We trace the independent development of these two initiatives and offer suggestions for how they might fruitfully transact, fully supporting vulnerable readers in their efforts to master sophisticated standards. Results from a school implementing these initiatives as an integrated whole are discussed.   [More]  Descriptors: Common Core State Standards, Response to Intervention, Educational Policy, Language Arts

Riddile, Mel (2012). What's New about the Common Core State Standards?, Principal Leadership. Center for American Progress (2014). For Women and Girls, the Common Core Is a Step toward Greater Equity. More engaging and challenging standards build a strong academic foundation for all students. Girls–and in particular, girls of color–have a lot to gain from more rigorous learning standards that better prepare them for college and career success. This fact sheet explores the positive effect the Common Core State Standards can have on gender equity in education. By raising the expectations for student learning, the Common Core State Standards allow girls the opportunity to seize STEM learning opportunities while in elementary and high school; to pursue a diverse set of college majors; and to obtain jobs that command higher salaries. The Common Core State Standards can expand on the progress girls have made since Title IX and can have a long-lasting impact on women in society. Cruz, Bárbara C.; Ellerbrock, Cheryl R. (2015). Developing Visual Literacy: Historical and Manipulated Photography in the Social Studies Classroom, Social Studies. The importance of visual literacy development is demonstrated using social studies examples from an innovative, collaborative arts program. Discussion of the Visual Thinking Strategies approach, connections to the Common Core State Standards, prompts for higher-order critical thinking, and the application of historical and social science ideas in the classroom are presented.   [More]  Descriptors: Visual Literacy, Social Studies, Art Education, Critical Thinking

Stohlmann, Micah; Maiorca, Cathrine; Olson, Travis A. (2015). Preservice Secondary Teachers' Conceptions from a Mathematical Modeling Activity and Connections to the Common Core State Standards, Mathematics Educator. Mathematical modeling is an essential integrated piece of the Common Core State Standards. However, researchers have shown that mathematical modeling activities can be difficult for teachers to implement. Teachers are more likely to implement mathematical modeling activities if they have their own successful experiences with such activities. This paper describes one well-structured framework for implementing mathematical modeling with the Common Core State mathematics standards that incorporates the Standards for Mathematical Practice. One class of preservice secondary teachers engaged in a mathematical modeling activity, reflected on their experience, and discussed how they could implement similar modeling activities. This study describes the preservice secondary teachers' work on the modeling activity, their impressions of the activity, and how the mathematical modeling activity was effectively structured in connection to the Common Core State Standards.   [More]  Descriptors: Secondary School Teachers, Preservice Teachers, Mathematical Models, Mathematics Instruction

VanTassel-Baska, Joyce (2015). Arguments for and against the Common Core State Standards, Gifted Child Today. This article identifies the arguments for and against the common core state standards in English language arts and mathematics. Although the standards need to be differentiated for gifted students, the author suggests that these standards may offer a way to transform education in the classroom, so that all students are able to fulfill their learning potential.   [More]  Descriptors: State Standards, Debate, Barriers, Performance Factors

Achieve, Inc. (2014). Toolkit for Evaluating Alignment of Instructional and Assessment Materials to the Common Core State Standards. In joint partnership, Achieve, The Council of Chief State School Officers, and Student Achievement Partners have developed a Toolkit for Evaluating the Alignment of Instructional and Assessment Materials to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The Toolkit is a set of interrelated, freely available instruments for evaluating alignment to the CCSS; each tool in the Toolkit supports the expectations in the CCSS and derives from the Publishers' Criteria for the Common Core State Standards. Following an introduction, this report provides: (1) An overview of what is in the toolkit; (2) Tools for evaluating alignment of instructional and assessment materials; and (3) Additional Resources for evaluating Alignment of Instructional Materials. The Publisher's Criteria for the Common Core State Standards is contained in the appendix. Carroll, Kathleen (2015). Testing on Trial, Grantmakers for Education. Standardized tests are under a microscope as states prepare to administer new PARCC and Smarter Balanced tests aligned to the Common Core State Standards. This brief takes on five concerns about testing and is designed to help funders reframe the larger conversation to preserve a critical source of information about school, teacher and student performance.   [More]  Descriptors: Standardized Tests, State Standards, Alignment (Education), Testing

Phillips, Vicki L.; Olson, Lynn (2013). Teachers Connect "with" Technology: Online Tools Build New Pathways to Collaboration, Journal of Staff Development. Teachers, curriculum experts, and other educators work together using online tools developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create high-quality, useful lessons and research-based instructional tools incorporating the Common Core State Standards.   [More]  Descriptors: State Standards, Academic Standards, College Readiness, Career Readiness

Newbill, Phyllis Leary; Drape, Tiffany A.; Schnittka, Christine; Baum, Liesl; Evans, Michael A. (2015). Learning across Space Instead of over Time: Redesigning a School-Based STEM Curriculum for OST, Afterschool Matters. Both employer expectations and education standards, including the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, are shifting the focus of learning from knowledge and discrete skills to the ability to think critically and creatively. This paper describes the process of translating an existing teacher-led STEM curriculum to fit a learner-led, voluntary learning environment.   [More]  Descriptors: After School Programs, After School Education, STEM Education, Learner Controlled Instruction

Chevalier, Juline A. (2015). Words & Pictures: Literacy, Art and Common Core Together, Journal of Museum Education. In a two-year study, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University education staff found that students who participated in a museum-school collaboration became more proficient in several Common Core State Standard skills than a control group. The program, Words & Pictures, directly ties to the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards and is infused with visual art from the museum's collection. An evaluation of the program demonstrated that students were twice as likely to support their ideas with evidence than their control group peers, and were more apt to notice details.   [More]  Descriptors: Museums, Teaching Methods, School Community Programs, Common Core State Standards

Kamil, Michael L. (2016). Common Core State Standards and Adaptive Teaching, Theory Into Practice. This article examines the issues of how Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will impact adaptive teaching. It focuses on 2 of the major differences between conventional standards and CCSS: the increased complexity of text and the addition of disciplinary literacy standards to reading instruction. The article argues that adaptive teaching under CCSS requires adaptations of teachers, as well as adaptation to student responses. These phenomena are particularly critical when using texts of higher complexity and when teaching reading in different disciplines.   [More]  Descriptors: Common Core State Standards, Instructional Innovation, Teaching Methods, Teaching Models
