Salmon River School District, Ft. Covington, NY. (1975). Akwesasne Mohawk. Book K. This is a highly illustrated text designed to teach vocabulary of Akwesasne Mohawk at the elementary level in a bilingual/bicultural setting. Each word is accompanied by its English equivalent. Vocabulary includes numbers 1-5, common animals and substances, and every day expressions such as "hello""goodbye," and "thank you." The Mohawk spelling and pronunciation are those used by the Akwesasne Mohawk people. Some basic dialogue exchanges are included at the end. Paciotto, Carla (1996). The Tarahumara of Mexico. This paper reviews factors contributing to the loss of language and culture of the Tarahumara people of Mexico and describes a program aimed at preserving Tarahumara language and culture. The Tarahumara people reside in the Sierra Tarahumara in the northern state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Although the Tarahumara people successfully avoided acculturation for centuries, today their land base has been reduced to half of its original size and less than 20 percent of the people residing in the Sierra are Tarahumara. More than ever, the intensification of economic enterprises brought about by the migration of non-Indians threatens the survival of Tarahumara culture. A 1984 government report addressing the educational needs of the Tarahumara people documented the gradual decline of Tarahumara language and culture, particularly among school-age children. In order to prevent further decline of Native language and culture, a bilingual/bicultural program was developed for indigenous elementary school children in the Sierra Tarahumara. The goal of the program was to modify the national curriculum on the basis of the cultural and linguistic characteristics of the Tarahumara. Now in its fourth year, the program integrates relevant cultural material, employs the Tarahumara language, has standardized materials based on the Tarahumara language, and implements teacher training courses for indigenous and non-Tarahumara teachers. The program's success, however, depends upon a larger community effort to maintain and strengthen the role of the Tarahumara language in daily family and social life, as well as to develop sustainable economic and social self-sufficiency.   [More]  Descriptors: Acculturation, American Indian Education, Bilingual Education Programs, Cultural Maintenance

Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Toronto (Ontario). Education Div. (1978). Teaching an Algonkian Language as a Second Language: A Core Program for Grade One. Ten units of first grade language instruction are presented in English, as a course guide for teachers who are expected to use only an Algonkian language in the classroom. The units, which are thematically titled (e.g. "The Little House"), cover two to four weeks' teaching time each. Classroom activities involve a variety of realia. Parallel to the list of activities is a guide to the grammatical or lexical principle each activity is intended to rehearse. Fallon, Berlie J., Ed. (1973). 40 Innovative Programs in Early Childhood Education. This book contains detailed descriptions of forty programs in early childhood education. Programs are innovative in the sense that each respresents new departures and approaches for the implementing school systems. The book contains two main sections: Section I, Innovative Programs in Early Childhood Education, and Section II, Resources Section, which includes an overview of the field of early childhood education and fourteen excerpts from materials provided by schools with exemplary programs. Also included are a glossary, a table of descriptor terms, some sources of information on early childhood education, and a selected bibliography. Pham-Van-Trong; Huynh-Van-Do (1976). National History. Grade 2. This textbook is the first in the national history series developed by the Ministry of Education in Saigon and used in all public schools in Vietnam. The three books in this series have been reprinted in their entirety from the original editions for use in elementary schools in the United States which have Vietnamese students. The grade 2 text contains four chapters: (1) The Legendary Beginning; (2) Historical Sites; (3) Regional Heroes; and (4) Famous Historical Figures. All illustrations are provided in black and white; therefore, references to colored illustrations in the text should be ignored. Lewelling, Vickie W. (1991). Academic Achievement in a Second Language. ERIC Digest. The academic achievement of limited-English-speaking (LEP) students has long been a major national educational concern. Paterson, John (1996). Deaf Culture's Impact on Educational Programs for the Deaf in Australia. This paper discusses recent trends in provision of educational programs and services reflecting the Deaf community's recognition in Australia as a linguistic and cultural minority, focusing on the Bilingual/Bicultural program of the Thomas Pattison School in Sydney (Australia). The history of Deaf culture, language, and education in Australia and the world at large is traced, leading up to the Deaf Pride movement. Education of Deaf students in light of the recognition of Deafness as a culture is examined, with a special focus on the challenges of providing multilingual education in signed English, American Sign Language, or Auslan. Incorporation of aspects of Deaf Culture into classroom teaching activities is described, incuding Deaf role models, Deaf history, and Deaf sports opportunities. Programs being developed in adult education centers and Deaf Studies courses at major universities, that enable Deaf people to feel an identification and sense of community are noted. Volume V: Task Order D100 Report–An Analysis of Language Minority and Limited English Proficient Students from NELS:88. Task Order D150 Report–An Analysis of Educational Services for Language Minority and Limited English Proficient Early Elementary School Students Based on Prospects: The Congressionally Mandated Study of Compensatory Education. Two reports concerning the education of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students are presented. The Task D100 report summarizes demographic characteristics and key research issues associated with high-school-age youth, including students and dropouts, who are identifiable as language minority and LEP in the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88). It also examines the aspirations of these students at the base year and in a follow-up survey, describes school programs and courses for this population, and describes student persistence and academic performance through high school. The Task D150 report focuses on first-grade cohort data from an earlier study and explores other data describing services available to language minority and LEP students. Peter, Katherine (1993). Dinjii Zhuh Ginjik Nagwan Tr'iltsaii. Gwich'in Junior Dictionary. This dictionary is designed to provide students with the Gwich'in equivalents of common conversational English words and phrases, and is intended for use in bilingual classrooms. Gwich'in is an Athabaskan language spoken in several villages in Alaska. An introductory section provides background information on Gwich' in orthography and phonology, the Gwich'in alphabet, dialects, the dictionary's content and format, and how the dictionary was composed. A subsequent section contains a guide to reading the language. The dictionary itself is an English-Gwich'in listing with some line drawings for illustration.
