Prado-Olmos, Patricia; And Others (1993). Students "DO" Process: Bilingual Students' Interactions in a Small Cooperative Learning Reading Group, Bilingual Research Journal. Analysis of the talk of four native Spanish-speaking third graders revealed the many reading and conversational strategies used as they cooperatively composed an answer to a reading comprehension question in Spanish. Demonstrates how students took a position on story interpretation, used evidence to support their positions, and came to the "right" answer through the process. Perez, Ricardo J.; Ochoa, Salvador Hector (1993). A Comparison of Planning and Personnel Factors in Bilingual Programs among Exemplary, Non-exemplary, and Accreditation Notice Schools, Bilingual Research Journal. A survey of 169 educators examined aspects of instructional leadership in elementary bilingual programs. Bilingual programs in exemplary schools differed from those in average schools or schools on accreditation notice in identification procedures, teacher involvement in program development and evaluation, and training in the use of pacing of first and second language instruction. Brisk, Maria Estela (1991). Crossing Cultural Barriers: A Model for Schooling Bilingual and English-Speaking Students in Harmony, Equity and Choice. The program fosters strong bonds between monolingual and bilingual students and teachers, acceptance of individuals regardless of ethnicity, development of English without loss of the native language, and better ties with parents of bilingual students. Reyhner, Jon (1992). Review of "Reversing Language Shift: Theoretical and Empirical Foundations of Assistance to Threatened Languages," by Joshua A. Fishman, Bilingual Research Journal. The book sees efforts to preserve and restore minority languages as societal reform efforts that lead to appreciation of other cultures as well. Describes a harassment documentation project conducted with 26 Vietnamese bilingual students, primarily immigrants, in an urban fourth-grade classroom. Results suggest the importance of documenting student experience as a reality and validity check and as a support a model for designing ways to gather meaningful data. McKay, Sandra Lee; Freedman, Sarah Warshauer (1990). Language Minority Education in Great Britain: A Challenge to Current U.S. Policy, TESOL Quarterly. The supportive institutional structures of these policies are examined, and the ways these differences reflect contrasting assumptions about language development and definitions of equality of opportunity are discussed. The results for 134 students in grades 3 through 6 from a study of the reliability and validity of the Sentence Verification Technique tests as measures of listening and reading comprehension performance in native languages and English are reported.
