Galindo, Rene; Olguin, Monica (1996). Reclaiming Bilingual Educators' Cultural Resources: An Autobiographical Approach, Urban Education. Critical reflection, mediated by autobiographical writing, can help bilingual educators reclaim cultural resources and consider how they might be integrated into their personal teaching philosophies. A case study of a bilingual educator illustrates the role of a key cultural value related to education in her teaching philosophy. Ekane, William (1991). Perceptions of Graduates of an Experimental Bilingual Program in Cameroon, Canadian Modern Language Review. Graduates (n=42) of an innovative bilingual program were surveyed concerning their language use, social behavior, occupational behavior and expectations, and postsecondary education. Participants rated their language skills favorably and had positive attitudes toward other language groups. Graduates also pursued many career paths because of their bilingual skills. Lipka, Jerry (1994). Language, Power, and Pedagogy: Whose School Is It?, Peabody Journal of Education. A collaborative research/school improvement project between a university, Alaskan village, and school district caused conflicts about power and ideology. The article chronicles project planning meetings, noting that the school district eventually instituted Yup'ik as a language of instruction. Constantino, Rebecca; Lavadenz, Magaly (1993). Newcomer Schools: First Impressions, Peabody Journal of Education. Highlights instructional practices in four California newcomer schools designed to address newly arrived immigrant students' instructional needs. Observations of the schools indicated effective instructional practices for that student population were not being used in most of the newcomer classrooms, despite a strong commitment to support and assist newly arrived students. Evans, Charlotte; Zimmer, Kyra (1993). Sign Talk Development Project, Winnipeg, Manitoba, ACEHI Journal. This article describes the program of the Sign Talk Children's Centre (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), a bilingual/bicultural day-care program for deaf and hearing children (ages two to five) of deaf and hearing parents. It also describes the program's systematic assessment of children's language delays in both English and American Sign Language. Kandiah, Thiru (1994). Exploiting the Theory of Universals in Adult Second Language Teaching, IRAL. This article presents a bilingual teaching strategy based on Noam Chomsky's universalist hypothesis, which emphasizes the "universal" aspects of human language. The strategy focuses on the matching process that all learners carry out between the first (L1) and second (L2) language, as well as the differences between L1 and L2. Stewart, David A. (1993). Bi-Bi to MCE?, American Annals of the Deaf. This paper discusses the role of American Sign Language (ASL) in educating deaf children, based on the history of using manually coded English (MCE). The paper concludes that use of ASL should not be the ultimate goal of bilingual bicultural programs, and, in some classrooms, the optimal program will be complementary use of ASL and MCE. Malicky, Grace V.; Derwing, Tracey (1993). Literacy Learning of Adults in a Bilingual ESL Classroom, Alberta Journal of Educational Research. A Canadian bilingual ESL program for Cambodians was taught by an experienced English-speaking ESL teacher and a Cambodian-speaking coteacher. Observations, interviews, and journal analysis showed that a bilingual monocultural format encouraged student participation and peer teaching and that second-language learning was facilitated by first-language literacy.
