Slesinger, Doris P.; Okada, Yoshitaka (1984). Fertility Patterns of Hispanic Migrant Farm Women: Testing the Effect of Assimilation, Rural Sociology. A 1978 study of 262 migrant Hispanic farm women in Wisconsin showed they have greater numbers of children at younger ages, greater infant mortality, and use fewer contraceptive techniques. These patterns will continue until level of education improves for the children, thus increasing bilingual capacity and improving occupational opportunities. Cathcart, W. George (1982). Effects of a Bilingual Instructional Program on Conceptual Development in Primary School Children, Alberta Journal of Educational Research. To investigate whether children who had been in a bilingual instructional program for three years or less would have some cognitive advantages over those in monolingual programs, 96 (50 percent male, 50 percent female) first to third graders from Edmonton (Alberta) were tested in 1979. Dawson, Don (1982). Ethnic Bilingual/Bicultural Programs in Canadian Public Schools, Canadian Modern Language Review. It does not appear that bilingual (ethnic/official language) schools in the public sector will replace private ethnic schools. Guthrie, James W. (1982). The Future of Federal Education Policy, Education and Urban Society. Explores the evolution of contemporary Federal educational policy and the implementation of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (partially Title I and Title VII) and the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. Krashen, Stephen D.; And Others (1984). A Theoretical Basis for Teaching the Receptive Skills, Foreign Language Annals. Presents areas of agreement among professionals on research and theory in language teaching as it is applicable to classroom methodology and contrasts these with assumptions held by many teachers and laypersons. Considers the practical implications of these points of accord and presents recommendations for teacher training and the development of language materials. Peterson, Paul E.; Rabe, Barry G. (1983). The Role of Interest Groups in the Formation of Educational Policy: Past Practice and Future Trends, Teachers College Record. A review of major federal education programs indicates that educational interest groups have played a modest role in shaping policy. Typically, these groups have ridden existing political and judicial currents to pass programs, and then have concentrated on maintaining their interests. Future roles are discussed. Shapson, S. M.; Day, E. M. (1982). A Comparison Study of Three Late Immersion Programs, Alberta Journal of Educational Research. Compares effects of three grade-six late immersion programs in British Columbia which differed in amount of instructional time in French (90 percent vs 60 percent), previous student French background, and use of selection criteria. Chesterfield, Kathleen Barrows; And Others (1982). Peer Interaction, Language Proficiency, and Language Preference in Bilingual Preschool Classrooms, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. Rodriguez, Imelda; Bethel, Lowell J. (1983). An Inquiry Approach to Science and Language Teaching, Journal of Research in Science Teaching. Determined effectiveness of inquiry approach to science and language teaching to further develop classification and oral communication skills of bilingual Mexican American third grade students (N=64). Results indicate that participation in science inquiry lessons facilitated development of both classification and oral communication skills. Gives information necessary to begin the process of applying for funding under individual federal education programs. Includes information on block grants, how to apply for funding, participation of private school students, and deadlines. Altena, Nelleke; Appel, Rene (1982). Mother Tongue Teaching and the Acquisition of Dutch by Turkish and Moroccan Immigrant Workers' Children, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Presents results of research on the second-language proficiency of children participating in an experimental bilingual school, where children used mother tongue 75 percent the first year, 40 percent the second. Children attended neighborhood schools from the third year on. Johnson, Kristi Planck (1984). Teacher Education for Immigrant Instruction in Denmark, Western European Education. In 1976 Denmark's Ministry of Education issued a formal policy which stated that foreign-speaking children would be taught by specially trained teachers. The teacher training program is discussed. McGreevy, Carol-Jean (1984). "I Don't Understand My Textbooks": Students Comment on Their Indian Bilingual Schooling in Mexico, Contemporary Educational Psychology. Three Tzotzil-speaking Mexican sisters were interviewed about their attitudes toward their Indian schooling. They enjoyed school and felt it was important to attend school to learn Spanish, though they had not acquired few linguistic skills. Lynch, James (1982). Community Relations and Multicultural Education in Australia, Comparative Education. It was only in the late 1970s that Australian educationists began to devote particular attention to the development of multicultural education in Australian society.
