Ramirez, Arnulfo G.; Politzer, Robert L. (1975). A Revised Spanish/English Oral Proficiency Test, 1974 Field Test Results. Research and Development Memorandum No. 134. A revised Spanish/English oral-proficiency test battery was administered to 40 Spanish-surnamed pupils equally divided by sex at grade levels 1, 3, 5, and 7. The test battery included parallel Spanish and English versions of: (1) a 12-item vocabulary pretest, (2) a 32-item vocabulary-by-domain test consisting of four sections–home, neighborhood, church, and school–of eight items each, and (3) a 32-item grammar production test requiring 10 different grammatical operations. The pupils' performance was similar (balanced) in both languages on the home and neighborhood domains in all grades; Spanish was dominant on the church domain in grades 1 and 3, balance not being achieved until grade 7. English was dominant only on the school domain in grade 5. Spanish was dominant on the grammar test through grade 5, with balance achieved in grade 7. The general tendency was for test scores to improve with grade level or years in school. The amount of variance in the test scores that could be reliably attributed to language use (i.e., language spoken with father, mother, friends, etc.) or demographic variables appeared small. Information about the reliability of test items and about correlations between the Spanish and English versions is given here, and the complete vocabulary and grammar tests are provided in appendixes.   [More]  Descriptors: Bilingual Education, Bilingualism, Elementary Education, English

Cillizza, Joseph; Devine, John M. (). Modular Sequence: Teaching Reading to Bilingual Learners. TTP 002.12; Developing a Child-Centered Curriculum. Teacher Corps Bilingual Project. This teaching module is designed to present guidelines for developing a child-centered reading program. Participants are shown how to utilize the information developed in previous modules in this sequence in order to structure a comprehensive, yet free and open, reading program. Emphasis is placed on the child as decision maker and the teacher as structurer of alternatives. Upon completion of the module, participants should be able to develop an acceptable outline for a hypothetical reading program which involves synthesizing previously developed module information. Participants complete a preassessment test, choose tasks from a list of alternatives, and conclude the module with a postassessment test. Cillizza, Joseph; Devine, John M. (). Modular Sequence: Teaching Reading to Bilingual Learners. TTP 002.10; Developing Reading Study Skill in Grade K-6. Teacher Corps Bilingual Project. This teaching module concerns acquisition of reading-study (i.e., work-type reading) skills in grades K-6. Such skills include locating information, evaluating material, organizing and summarizing data, returning essentials of what is read, and flexibility (adjusting rate to purpose). Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to (a) successfully answer the questions which follow a selected article in order to demonstrate their application of study skills, and (b) successfully identify study skills necessary for completing the above activity. Participants complete a preassessment test, choose tasks from a list of alternatives, and conclude the module with a postassessment test.   [More]  Descriptors: Bilingual Education, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Learning Activities

Morton, Lois (1974). Learning English as a Second Language, Workbook-Fourth Level. The workbook for the fourth level of the "Learning English as a Second Language" series follows the basic principle employed in the first three levels of the series: in learning a second language there must be emphasis on hearing, imitation, and practice, then on reading and writing. The workbook, entirely in English, is written for children in the elementary grades and intended for classroom use. New structures and vocabulary are introduced in a controlled sequence. By the time the student has reached Level IV, he or she should be ready to read most of the material contained in this book. If the student is competent orally but has not yet mastered equal reading skills, the material is adaptable to orally based instruction, through which the student can gradually improve his reading. The illustrated volume contains dialogues, activities, stories, and drills. Instructions and suggestions for the teacher are included. Bielawski, Joseph G.; Pickens, Marjorie (1976). I Didn't Say a Word/No Dije una Palabra. This bilingual English/Spanish book of captioned photographs and its related teaching manual were created as a joyful experience in nonverbal communication for children and adults. It is intended to sharpen awareness of nonverbal messages expressed by children in their everyday environment. To help develop self-understanding and to encourage oral communication, each of 40 photos of children in various activities and situations and the accompanying four-line "stories" or captions present certain elements: (1) a common problem or situation; (2) how a child feels about it; (3) what a child might do about it; (4) what you would do about it. The photographs and text are designed to illustrate specific senses and emotions – taste, smell, touch, happiness, tiredness, fear, etc. English and Spanish vocabulary lists follow. The teacher's manual suggests best use of the book and recommends teaching procedures to develop various skills. These include discussion of background information, reading readiness, vocabulary enrichment, picture reading, discussion and independent thinking, and related activities. Molina, Huberto (1975). The Development and Evaluation of the SWRL English Language and Concepts Program for Spanish-Speaking Children. Primary goals of the SWRL English Language and Concepts Program for Spanish-Speaking Children (LCS) are to teach Spanish-speaking children to communicate effectively in oral English language skills. An increasing amount of attention is given to the development of skills that prepare the children for future reading and writing in mathematics, science, and social studies. An important objective in the development of LCS has been to develop instructional and assessment procedures that will help integrate the program into extant bicultural, bilingual programs that will strengthen and extend the Hispanic cultural characteristics. During the five tryouts of LCS, the instructional, training and assessment systems of the LCS program have been developed and tested. In the early tryouts, the program format was in the developmental stage. In the last three, the components covering all 15 units were available for the year-long tryouts. Schools were selected to represent various demographic situations. A total of 7,100 children, ranging from kindergarten to grade 8, have been involved. Teacher comments, observation reports, and assessment scores were used as data sources.   [More]  Descriptors: Bilingual Education, Elementary Education, English (Second Language), Evaluation Methods
