Hopkins, Adam (1978). Beware, Welsh War Zone, Times Educational Supplement (London). To promote bilingualism, the education authority of Gwynedd, in northwestern Wales, is seeking to increase the amount of compulsory Welsh instruction. Purbhoo, Mary; Shapson, Stan (1977). A Transition Program for Italian Children, Canadian Modern Language Review. A pilot bilingual project was set up for children of Italian immigrants. Before entering first grade, the children attend junior and senior kindergarten classes with children of similar linguistic and cultural background. Bigler, Ellen (1996). Telling Stories: On Ethnicity, Exclusion, and Education in Upstate New York, Anthropology & Education Quarterly. Public debate between Euro-American seniors and minority speakers on the educational needs of the Hispanic-American community in upstate New York is examined. Differing views of group identity emerge, and reasons for the social and educational status of the ethnic minority are presented. Also examined are reasons for conflict over multicultural education. Chew, Laureen (1975). Practice Speaking Cantonese. This is a home study unit designed for students learning Chinese as a Second Language (CSL). The lessons in this home study unit are coordinated with Level 1 of "Chinese as a Second Language," and include words and phrases, conversations and self tests. The 32 lessons deal with: greetings (lesson 1), getting acquainted (2), asking people's ages (3), addresses (4), phone numbers (5), days of the week (6), colors (7), classroom phrases (8 and 9), the use of "want" and "have" (10-14), the use of classifiers (15-17), parts of the body (18-20), the use of question words (21-27), the use of "place" words (28), two forms of "thank you" (29), the use of "people" words (30-31), and the use of "family member" words (32). Genesee, Fred (1978). A Longitudinal Evaluation of an Early Immersion School Program, Canadian Journal of Education. English-speaking pupils, who had participated since kindergarten in a French immersion program, were compared to French-speaking students and to English-speakers in a regular elementary program which included French instruction. Rolstad, Kellie (1997). Effects of Two Way Immersion on the Ethnic Identification of Third Language Students: An Exploratory Study, Bilingual Research Journal. An exploratory study used Los Angeles' Korean/English Bilingual Immersion Project (KEBIP) to examine effects of two-way immersion on ethnic identification of third-language speakers who received no first-language support from teachers. KEBIP participants were compared with ethnically matched students from other classrooms. Third-language students fared well in language development and ethnic identification. Contains 33 references. Teacher Corps Bilingual Project. This module provides the participant with an overview of living conditions of the Puerto Rican in New York, so that as a teacher he may better understand the conflicts and emerging values of both parents and children on the mainland. Upon completion of this module, the participant will be able to list and describe the advantages and disadvantages of living conditions in New York as contrasted with life on the island. The student completes a preassessment test, chooses tasks from a list of alternatives, and concludes the module with a postassessment test. Constable, D. (1977). Bilingualism in the United Republic of Cameroon, English Language Teaching Journal. The status of bilingualism in Cameroon is unusual in that both French and English are foreign languages. Although French seems to be predominant, the official intent is to establish bilingual primary schools to create completely bilingual individuals.
