Hernandez-Delgado, Julio L. (1992). Pura Teresa Belpre, Storyteller and Pioneer Puerto Rican Librarian, Library Quarterly. Chronicles the work of Pura Belpre–the first Puerto Rican librarian hired by the New York Public Library–as a children's librarian, author, storyteller, and promulgator of Puerto Rican folktales. Programs she developed are described, including services to the Spanish-speaking community, bilingual story hours, puppet theaters, and outreach programs. Hayashibara, Phyllis J. Kimura (1978). A Guide to Bilingual Instructional Materials for Speakers of Asian and Pacific Island Languages, Amerasia Journal. The lack of bilingual instructional materials is acute for speakers of Asian and Pacific Island languages. Mathematics and science materials are virtually nonexistent. Social studies materials must be expanded from their present supplementary forms. Language materials must be revised to provide students a practical, working fluency in the non native language. Olsen, Laurie (1988). Crossing the Schoolhouse Border: Immigrant Children in California, Phi Delta Kappan. An unprecedented number of foreign-born children in California classrooms are forcing educators to rethink school programs, structures, policies, and staffing. Schools are largely overwhelmed by demographic changes, war-traumatized and undocumented children, tremendous academic gaps, and cultural and language diversity. Moffatt, Suzanne (1991). Becoming Bilingual in the Classroom: Code Choice in School, Language and Education: An International Journal. In this sociolinguistic study of the language patterns of 10 young mother-tongue Panjabi-speaking children, the children are educated in England and first exposed to English at about age 3, resulting in sequential acquisition of bilingualism. Simpson, Grant W. (1997). To Grow a Teacher, American School Board Journal. To help recruit African American and Hispanic teachers, Southwest Texas State University started a program in 1992 called Enhancing Diversity in Teaching. Funded by a foundation and the Texas Education Association, the program provides university scholarships for paraprofessionals working with bilingual, Chapter 1, migrant, or special-education students in five Texas districts. Kelebay, Yarema Gregory (1992). Pidgin Progressivism–Again, Canadian Social Studies. Discusses a report of a task force on English language education in Quebec. Gillham, Virginia (1991). Canada, Government Publications Review. Lists and annotates 130 publications from the federal government of Canada and from the various Canadian provinces. Major topics include environmental concerns, particularly ecologically responsible forestry, global warming, and waste disposal/recycling; education at all levels, including bilingual concerns; and the Belanger-Campeau report, which addresses the future of Quebec. Williams, Norma (1988). A Mexican American Woman Encounters Sociology: An Autobiographical Perspective, American Sociologist. Describes the author's experience of teaching bilingual educators. Identifies the bureaucratic structure of the school and the Mexican American culture as the two problem areas focused upon during the course. Concludes that her major areas of research interest in sociology are a direct product of her ethnicity, work experience, and this instruction. Zentella, Ana Celia (1997). Latino Youth at Home, in Their Communities, and in School: The Language Link, Education and Urban Society. Explores the role that language plays in determining why, what, and how Latino youth learn in their communities. It highlights the fundamental, and often overlooked, resource that Latino English-Spanish bilingualism represents for building bridges between communities, homes, and schools. Grant, Nigel (1997). Multicultural Education in Scotland: Ourselves and Others, Scottish Educational Review. Examines the persistence of prejudice, especially about language, at a time when multicultural educational objectives are (apparently) widely accepted. Discusses belief in the "bilingual deficit," views of culture within Scotland, the role of cultural "markers" in religion and language, acculturation in various contexts, and needed tasks within multicultural education. Orellana, Marjorie Faulstich (1994). Appropriating the Voice of the Superheroes: Three Preschoolers' Bilingual Language Uses in Play, Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Investigated how three Spanish-speaking children, enrolled in a bilingual preschool, used Spanish and English with each other. Results indicated that exposure to English books and popular cultural materials enabled them to use English readily and easily but that their use of English during play superceded their use of Spanish, suggesting the potential for imbalance in their bilingual and biliterate development. Williamson, John (1989). An Extra Radiator? Teachers' Views of Support Teaching and Withdrawal in Developing the English of Bilingual Pupils, Educational Studies. Explores the attitudes of British secondary school teachers toward withdrawal and mainstream support as ways of helping bilingual pupils develop competence in English. Suggests that the results allow for envisaging an ideal classroom situation for teaching bilingual pupils. Johnson, Patricia T. (1988). Improving the Curriculum for Limited-English-Speaking Students at Sierra Junior High, NASSP Bulletin. When 40 Spanish-speaking students registered for classes 5 years ago, the Sierra Junior High School staff (New Mexico) designed a language development program and created student and teacher schedules in 24 hours. This article describes curricular emphases and program progress. A new goal is to encourage both English and Spanish proficiency. Includes 12 references.
