Stanutz, Spencer (1974). The Teaching of French as a Second Language in Ottawa, Canadian Modern Language Review. The Ottawa school system conducts French instruction in both immersion and "core" or regular programs. Special features are bilingual grades at the higher level and a bilingual high school. Miller, Robert (1982). The Mexican Approach to Developing Bilingual Materials and Teaching Literacy to Bilingual Students, Reading Teacher. Describes the rationale and methods used in Mexico for developing and using bilingual materials for both primary school students and adults. Gradman, Harry L.; Young, Robert W. (1972). Evaluating Reading Materials in Navajo: Report of a Teachers' Conference (Gallup, New Mexico, April 28-29, 1972). Navajo Reading Study Progress Report No. 18. Elementary-grade reading materials produced in the Navajo language were evaluated at a teacher's conference held in Gallup, New Mexico, on April 28-29, 1972. Participants, mostly teachers, at the conference numbered approximately 45. The 5 texts evaluated were "Mosilgai" (School Cat), "Jasper," Pabii Doo Masi" (Puppy and Cat), "Da'iida" (Eat), and "Hastoi Taa." Each of the books was discussed in detail by the authors, who presented the rationale behind their work, and then by conference participants, many of whom had familiarized themselves with the books through classroom use. Criticisms were presented not so much in terms of text revision, but rather in terms of future materials preparation. Also discussed were the relationship between spelling and dialect, the possibility of alternate readers, and better fit for different dialect areas; but the discussion remained unresolved. In addition, some objections to the size of the print, essentially 12 point IBM Directory type, were discussed. Swain, Merrill; And Others (1981). Early French Immersion Later On, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Summarizes an evaluation of an early French immersion program at grades 6 and 8. In English language skills, immersion students performed as well as, or better than, English-only program groups; in mathematics and sciences, immersion students did as well as their comparison group. Dyer, Frederick N. (1972). The Stroop Phenomenon and Its Use in the Study of Perceptual, Cognitive and Response Processes. The review summarizes empirical findings and theoretical views related to the Stroop color-word phenomenon, in which naming of a color is disrupted and delayed by the presence of an "irrelevant" word denoting a color different from the color patch. It was deemed important to increase awareness of this phenomenon, since it involves basic processes of perception, identification, reading, and naming, which account for much of human behavior. Experimental findings were emphasized in a review of research, most of which was produced since the 1966 review of Jensen and Rohwer. One purpose of the review was to illustrate use of the Stroop paradigm as a tool for the study of word meaning, bilingual language organization, and perception and processing differences between the two hemispheres. The incompleteness, and in some cases the inappropriateness, of existing explanations of the Stroop phenomenon also were discussed. Ramsey, C. A.; Wright, E. N. (1969). Students of Non-Canadian Origin: A Descriptive Report of Students in Toronto Schools. This report presents a study describing and comparing two groups of students who speak English as a first or second language: "New Canadians" (those students born outside Canada) and "Canadian Born" students. Emphasizing the collection of background information on the overall student population, an extensive Student Background Questionnaire was administered along with a battery of group ability tests and the use of teacher ratings. Basic frequency distributions of responses appear in Appendix A. A random selection of 25 percent of grade 5, 7, and 9 classes in the Toronto system was designated for the sample in an attempt to provide norms and material with which the reader may generalize to students in Toronto schools. In the data presented, response differences to a few of the categories of the questionnaire are clearly evident between Canadian Born and Non Canadian Born as to their "degree" of exposure to English; numbers of students who received instruction in English as a second language; the formal maintainance of language other than English; rural and urban background of students; and education background of parents.   [More]  Descriptors: Bilingual Education, Bilingualism, Comparative Analysis, Educational Research

Reviews the history of language legislation in Quebec, specifically regarding the relationship between French and English. Coleman, Herman W. (1972). Michigan Education Association, Division of Minority Affairs, Annual Report, August 1972. Evaluative data relative to the effectiveness of the Division of Minority Affairs in arriving at defined goals and objectives are presented in this annual report. Program descriptions and specific objectives are given for 9 projects. Ciborowski, Tom; Choy, Stephen (1974). Nonstandard English and Free Recall: An Exploratory Study, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. In a study of non-disadvantaged Hawaiian school children, a free recall task was used to compare the performance of standard English speaking children to a group of children speaking Hawaiian Islands dialect.
