(1981). Academic Achievement in the Milingimbi Education Program, TESOL Quarterly. Reports on a study of the bilingual program in the Milingimbi community in Australia. For four years, children from both English-only and bilingual classes were tested for achievement in academic subjects. By the seventh year, children in the bilingual classes were performing better than the English-only children. A two-year study of learning disabilities found in association with French immersion programs indicates that children encountering difficulty in primary French immersion programs have a specific learning disability characterized by a pattern suggesting a maturational lag in the temporal lobe regions of the brain.
