Trasvina, John (1988). Official English/English Only: More Than Meets the Eye. In response to the movement to declare English the official language of the United States (by state legislation/ballot initiative or federal constitutional amendment), this pamphlet addresses commonly raised issues in the debate over language legislation in the United States. The paper urges the reader to reject the Official English/English Only movement and to support English Plus (a program to expand opportunities for limited English proficient individuals to learn English). National Women's History Project, Windsor, CA. (1992). Las Heroinas en el Mundo Mio y Yo (Myself and Women Heroes in My World). This book offers a series of lesson plans and resources for teaching young learners (K-3) about heroines in U.S. history. The book offers general guidelines for presentation of the materials as well as specific suggestions for individual lessons. Each lesson focuses on a particular historical figure and includes a biography, a lesson plan outline, sample discussion questions, and reproducible visual aids. The women explored in the guide are: Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Queen Liliuokalani, Amelia Earhart, Maria Tallchief, and Sonia Manzano. The final activity involves the student creating a personal history. Both the text and the materials are in Spanish. Guskin, Judith T.; Goldstein, Beth L. (1983). From Laos to the Midwest: Schools and Students in Transition Guide for Video Programs: Pain and Promise [and] Fitting In. Bulletin No. 49-05. This guide is intended for use with two videotapes–"Pain and Promise" and "Fitting In"–that address the educational needs of Hmong and Lao students. Information presented in the guide includes brief descriptions of the social organization, religions, languages, and educational backgrounds of Lao and Hmong refugees. Differences and similarities between the two groups are also outlined. Indochinese bilingual program models in the three school districts featured in the videotapes (St. Paul, Minnesota; and Sheboygan and Madison, Wisconsin) are described. Problems from the perspectives of Indochinese students and the schools are then reviewed, and solutions are considered. An extensive list of references (publications; slides, videotapes, and films; and sources for Lao, Hmong, and general Indochinese materials) is also provided. Bilingual Evaluation Technical Assistance Workshop II. The first part of the leader's guide for the workshop on bilingual program evaluation design is presented. The two-part guide is accompanied by a participant's handbook and a workshop text. The evaluation design workshop is the second of five 4-hour workshops designed to meet the basic information needs of teachers and administrators with little knowledge of evaluation programs. The other workshops cover an overview of evaluation, student testing and assessment, implementation evaluation, and evaluation management. The leader's guide provides guidelines for workshop organization and preparation, room arrangement, and scheduling as well as scripts for introducing and conducting workshop activities. The five activities described in the first part focus on basic design concepts and cover identifying threats to evaluation validity, identifying the necessary questions, specifying implementation and outcome questions, and making the transition from instrumentation to data analysis.
