Dodson, C. J. (1985). Second Language Acquisition and Bilingual Development: A Theoretical Framework, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. Presents a theory that all developing and developed bilinguals have a preferred and a second language (L2) and that the bilingual increases L2 competence through fluctuating activity between bilingual preferred L2 medium-oriented communication and monolingual L2 message-oriented communication. Hakuta, Kenji (1987). Degree of Bilingualism and Cognitive Ability in Mainland Puerto Rican Children, Child Development. Results indicated a positive relationship between nonverbal intelligence measures and degree of bilingualism in younger subjects. The relationship attenuated over time and age level. Cox, Beth (1993). "Como Esta? Quiere Escribir?": How Are You? Do You Want to Write?, Writing Notebook: Visions for Learning. Describes a two-week bilingual poetry writing unit that combined a creative writing class and a Spanish class and that compiled a classbook of students' poems in the two languages. Akamatsu, Carol Tane; Armour, Victoria A. (1987). Developing Written Literacy in Deaf Children through Analyzing Sign Language, American Annals of the Deaf. The effects of complementary sign language instruction on three measures of literacy were evaluated with six severely to profoundly deaf high school residential students. Instruction involved comparing American Sign Language and English, literal and figurative translation, and editing and grammatical English skills.
