Escamilla, Kathy (1994). The Sociolinguistic Environment of a Bilingual School: A Case Study Introduction, Bilingual Research Journal. This study examined the results of a case study of a school that labels itself as a bilingual school. The study examines and describes language use in bilingual classrooms in the school and language use in the larger school environment outside of the classroom. Valverde, Leonard A. (1978). Strategies for the Advancement of Cultural Pluralism, Phi Delta Kappan. Lambert, Wallace E. (1978). An Alternative to the Foreign Language Teaching Profession, Interchange on Educational Policy. Saunders, Jacalyn (1997). Educating Deaf and Hearing Children in a Bilingual/Bicultural Environment, CAEDHH Journal/La Revue ACESM. Bilingual/bicultural (Bi/Bi) programs for children who are deaf are usually delivered via either transitional or maintenance models. Transitional models use the native language to teach a second language, whereas maintenance models teach and use both languages throughout the school day. Durga, Ramanand (1978). Bilingualism and Interlingual Interference, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. Findings indicate that there are significant differences in semantic distance between English-Spanish bilinguals and English monolinguals, that semantic distance differed between balanced bilinguals and Spanish-dominant bilinguals, and that the balanced bilinguals have a greater repertoire of verbal information than their monolingual peers. McCarty, Tim (1996). Bringing Language to Life, Perspectives in Education and Deafness. A teacher at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (District of Columbia) briefly describes the process of interpreting poetry and drama into American Sign Language (ASL) with his students. The process involves analysis and discussion, followed by mapping the subtext and adapting it to ASL. The process improves not only acting skills but also reading, English, and ASL skills. Saylor, Patricia J. (1992). A Hearing Teacher's Changing Role in Deaf Education, Harvard Educational Review.
