Camacho, Julian S. (1995). Compton Community College General Education Associate of Arts/Certification, Bilingual Immersion Program for the California State University System. The Compton Community College (CCC) General Education Associate of Arts/Certification Bilingual Immersion Program (BIP) is designed to allow English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) or limited English proficiency (LEP) students to study subjects beyond ESL in a bilingual setting. Current ESL programs offer students no oppurtunity to take degree/transfer credit courses until they have achieved proficiency in English, usually a 3-year process. As a result, the majority of ESL students neither earn a degree nor transfer. The BIP would allow ESL/LEP students to earn an associate's degree while meeting California State University transfer requirements and mastering English. The transfer/degree credit classes would be taught by bilingual instructors, and course content would mirror that in an English-only classroom. To qualify for and remain in the program a BIP student would have to meet the following requirements: 60 units of degree applicable work with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of "C" or better in all courses counted for the degree and major; all 60 units must be completed at CCC; in addition to ESL course work, each student must take a minimum of 2 courses per semester (12 units per year) and complete the program in a maximum of 5 years. Students must earn the 60 units in the following 6 areas: communication and the English language and critical thinking (12 units); natural science and mathematics (9 units); arts and humanities (9 units); social science (9 units); understanding and self-development (3 units); and counseling (6 units). The most important component of the program is locating qualified bilingual instructors. In order to achieve success with the BIP program a tutorial aspect will be included. Pill, Albert (1988). The Teaching of Mexican Culture in a Bilingual Bicultural Program, Journal of Educational Issues of Language Minority Students. A set of classroom experiences for teaching Mexican culture is outlined. Cadilla de Ruibal, Carmen Alicia (1977). Vamos a Jugar con Letras (Let's Play with Letters). This Spanish language workbook is intended to help elementary school children learn the Spanish alphabet. Each page presents a letter of the alphabet, a number of Spanish words beginning with that letter, and pen and ink drawings illustrating some of the words. The drawings are suitable for coloring. Carter, Thomas P.; Chatfield, Michael L. (1986). Effective Bilingual Schools: Implications for Policy and Practice, American Journal of Education. Presents a paradigm of the relation between bilingual program effectiveness and school-wide effectiveness. Presents a case study of Clavin J. Lauderbach Community School, a southern California elementary school where both school and bilingual programs are effective. Mutually reinforcing interaction between bilingual programs and school context produces high levels of student achievement. New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Office of Educational Evaluation. (1986). William H. Taft High School Project HOLA 1983-1984. O.E.A. Evaluation Report. This report evaluates Project HOLA, in its first year of funding, which provides instruction in English as a second language, Spanish language skills, and bilingual instruction in mathematics, science, and social studies to approximately 230 students in a high school in Bronx, New York. The report examines the project's long- and short-range goals, its organizational structure in the school, and the school climate for mainstreamed students. The first two sections give student demographics and characteristics, followed by a description of Project HOLA's history, objectives, philosophy, and structure, funding, and staff. Section IV outlines the instructional services offered through the program, describing student placement and programming, classroom observations, and the mainstreaming of students as they progress in the program. Section V describes the non-instructional components of the program, including curriculum and materials developmemt, support services, staff development, student feelings about the program, and parental and community involvement. Palandra, Maria; Cardone, Romolo (1978). Dalla A alla Z: l'alfabeto dei bambini (From A to Z: The Children's Alphabet). This Italian alphabet book designed for kindergarten and first grade students presents each letter in upper and lower case form accompanied by an illustration and a single sentence caption. The sentence contains two or more words that begin with the letter in question. The book has a teacher's introduction and is illustrated by pen-and-ink drawings.
