For example, if students have a solid foundation in grammar in their primary language, use it in explaining English grammar. Gentry, Ruben; Walker, James (1981). Problems and Issues in Educating Bilingual Handicapped Children with Implications for Teacher Education. The paper charts problems and issues involved in serving bilingual handicapped students, and proposes a framework for educating culturally diverse children. Among issues touched upon are those of group identity vs. national unity, use of the native language vs. English, introduction of the second language into the curriculum, and teacher preparation. The authors propose a framework which takes into account cultural background, teacher characteristics and preparation, and the learning process. Dropkin, Ruth, Ed.; Tobier, Arthur, Ed. (1973). Notes from Workshop Center for Open Education. March 1973. This document is a collection of articles on various subjects in education. "Aspects of a Bilingual Classroom" includes considerations of the function of self-confidence and the nature of the curriculum in a classroom with bilingual students. "Learning to Read" discusses reading instruction from the point of view of child development, with special consideration given to the teacher's role. "A Process Insignificant and Long Known" is taken from Tolstoy's writings on education. "Game is a Verb" and "Math Games" concern the use of games in classroom instruction. Horst, D. P.; And Others (1980). An Evaluation of Project Information Packages (PIPs) as Used for the Diffusion of Bilingual Projects. Volume III: A Prototype Guide to Measuring Achievement Level and Program Impact on Achievement in Bilingual Projects. This report describes an evaluation of Project Information Packages (PIPs), sets of manuals and other materials intended to help a school district adopt and implement an exemplary education project. Four PIPs were evaluated in a field test, each PIP describing a different bilingual project. It was concluded that the awareness materials produced few application for PIPs. Field-test sites that received PIPs tended not to follow PIP guidelines closely, but to adapt them extensively, often with good justification. The bilingual programs at the sites were collectively successful, but the dissemination effort could not be judged a success. The present volume is a collection of specific evaluation guidelines and job aides that were developed for the use of the field-test sites and that have been organized in the format of a Prototype Evaluation Manual. This volume should be viewed as a preliminary draft. Flouris, George (1980). A Study of Cross-Cultural Awareness among Greek American Students Enrolled in Monolingual and Bilingual Schools, Modern Language Journal. Describes comparative study of Greek American students participating in a Greek transitional bilingual program with Greek American students in regular monolingual public schools. Rosenbusch, Marcia H.; Draper, Dianne C. (1985). Gifted Preschoolers: Learning Spanish as a Second Language, Roeper Review. Programs for teaching conversational Spanish to gifted preschoolers indicated that the children learned to correctly pronounce Spanish and could remember and use new vocabulary after two or three class sessions.
