Teacher's Guide I (Mathematics: A Universal Language. Intermediate Grades, Level 1-3. Teacher's Guide I). This guide covers the first part of a bilingual, sequential mathematics course. The course integrates culturally relevant situations and illustrations with mathematics to reinforce the student's self-concept and encourage cultural pride. This program may be used as a self-contained continuum, as a supplement to another course of study, for individualized instruction, or in the large-group, traditional classroom. These materials are written in English and Spanish for grades 6-8, but may be used for other grade levels. The guide includes suggestions on grouping, presentations, goal setting, scheduling, a testing center, a mathematics laboratory, assignment of materials, and grading. Also included are an overview, behavioral objectives, patterns for duplicating masters or transparencies and patterns for materials to be used in suggested activities. The mathematical topics covered in this guide include numeration, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and measurement. Dissemination and Assessment Center for Bilingual Education, Austin, TX. (1979). Keys to Communication: English for Spanish Speakers. Teacher Edition, Level One. This text is the first of four levels sequenced as a continuum of language skills for the Spanish speaker of limited English speaking ability in grades six through nine. Levels one and two emphasize oral skills and levels three and four emphasize written skills. The teacher's edition is designed to follow along with and complement exercises included in the student edition. Special instructions are directed to the teacher. Directions in Spanish may serve as a model for the teacher with limited Spanish proficiency. Each of the fourteen units consists of the exercises and glossary included in the student text along with descriptions of: (1) key concepts introduced in the unit; (2) objectives concerning the condition of performance, the resultant behavior, and the criterion level for evaluation; (3) materials or individuals needed to conduct the activities presented in the unit; (4) additional activities to reinforce and extend introduced skills; (5) evaluation tests; and (6) a list of references helpful in preparing the units. Student oral and written exercises are divided into three areas of concentration–oral practice, pronunciation, and structure–and are designed for group and/or individual use. Rintell, Ellen (1979). Getting Your Speech Act Together: The Pragmatic Ability of Second Language Learners. Working Papers on Bilingualism, No. 17. A role-playing procedure for elicitation of speech acts was designed to study aspects of the communicative competence of second language learners, namely, their language variation with respect to deference when the age and sex of the addressee are systematically manipulated. Sixteen Spanish-speaking adult learners of English as a second language participated in the study. The requests and suggestions evoked in the role-playing situations, in both the native and target languages, were rated by judges for deference. The resulting scores were analyzed to yield the effects of the sex of speaker and the age and sex of addressee on the level of deference conveyed in the utterances. It was found that in the requests, age was a significant factor in both languages, but sex of speaker and addressee were significant only in Spanish. For the suggestions, significant age and sex factors appeared only in the English corpus, while there were none in the Spanish one. The results are interpreted with attention to the notions of transfer of pragmatic strategies and the concurrent reformulation of deference requirements for the second language. A handbook for teachers and administrators dealing with limited-English-speaking native Pilipino-speaking students in the schools gives information on the unique historical, sociocultural, and linguistic characteristics of this group and provides information about educational resources. It begins with an overview of Filipino immigration history, distribution in the United States, educational background, schooling problems, and parental attitudes. The second chapter looks at historical and sociocultural factors affecting Filipinos in the Philippines and in California. Chapter 3 outlines characteristics of the Pilipino language, including language distribution in the Philippines, features of Philippine languages, the controversy over a native language in the Philippines, the implications for language instruction in the United States, differences between Pilipino and English, characteristics of written Pilipino, and notes on the interrelationship of language and culture. The fourth chapter suggests instructional and curriculum strategies for Pilipino language development, including methods for teaching reading and writing in Pilipino, oral English instruction, bilingual reading instruction, criteria for introduction of English reading, and comments on exposure to English and Pilipino. Andrade, Magdalena; Sones, Mary (1975). Learning Achievement Packages, Language Arts–Spanish Grammar. This set of three Spanish curriculum units is part of a series developed as part of a Spanish-English bilingual project and designed to deal with special language difficulties in grades 7-12 and adult education classes. These units are intended to aid the first- or second-year student in specific problem areas: capital letters, dictionary use, and orthographic eccentricities of the letter "g." Each unit contains basic grammatical information for the teacher, guidelines and remarks, exercises, general review, and pre- and post-lesson tests. Rendon, Clara; And Others (1976). Language Arts – English Grammar. This publication presents four suggested language arts curriculum units. They represent a cross-section of materials that have been developed to deal with the learning problems of students with special language difficulties. Originally developed for grades 7-12, these units may be adapted for use in adult education or at other grade levels. They are primarily designed for use with students learning English as a second language, and are directed to the purpose of developing habits of proper usage in English. The four units are: (1) Common and Proper Nouns; (2) Homonyms; (3) Singular and Plural Nouns; and (4) The Use of the Dictionary. Each unit includes: (1) information for the teacher in the form of the principal idea to be communicated, behavioral objectives, and the rationale of the unit, (2) an information sheet which outlines the main points to be taught, (3) exercises, (4) a pretest and a posttest, and (5) the answer key. Tombari, Martin; Mangino, Evangelina (1978). How to Write Criterion-Referenced Tests for Spanish-English Bilingual Programs. This manual is intended to serve as a step-by-step guide to writing criterion-referenced tests. It includes directions on constructing and scoring various types of test items to measure each level of cognitive function. The manual gives a method for writing, analyzing and rewriting instructional objectives; preparing a content outline; matching test items with objectives; and writing the test items. This guide can be used as a self-paced learning device, as a workshop manual, or as reference material. It provides examples and exercises in both Spanish and English to facilitate skill mastery and reinforce concepts. They represent a cross-section of materials that have been developed to deal with the learning problems of students with special language difficulties in grades 7 through 12, in addition to classes in adult education. The units were classroom-tested during 1970-72. The units, which are presented in both English and Spanish, deal with: cell theory, mitosis, magnification and wounds.
