Slavin, Robert E.; Cheung, Alan (2004). A Synthesis of Research on Language of Reading Instruction for English Language Learners, Success for All Foundation. This paper reviews experimental studies of reading programs for English language learners, focusing on comparisons of various bilingual and English-only programs. The review method is best-evidence synthesis, which uses a systematic literature search, quantification of outcomes as effect sizes, and extensive discussion of individual studies that meet inclusion standards. A total of 18 studies met the inclusion standards. Among 13 studies focusing on elementary reading for Spanish-dominant students, 9 favored bilingual approaches on English reading measures, and 4 found no differences, for a median effect size of +0.52 (based on 8 studies with sufficient data for computation of ES). Two of three studies of heritage languages (French, Choctaw, and Cherokee) and two secondary studies favored bilingual approaches. The review concludes that while the number of high-quality studies is small, existing evidence favors bilingual approaches, especially paired bilingual strategies that teach reading in the native language and English at different times each day. Corbell, Gloria; And Others (1973). Spanish Oral Language Guide: Kindergarten Level. Espanol como Segundo Idioma. Teacher's Guide: Level I. This teacher's guide to Spanish language at the kindergarten level includes a recommended subject presentation sequence for the Spanish curriculum, a sample schedule, a grouping of students using three stations, and a classroom layout. The grouping would be effective when at least one-third of the children are Spanish-speaking or bilingual. The subjects listed for the individual stations are reading readiness, math, social studies, science, Spanish as a second language, and English as a second language. The Spanish curriculum units are as follows: basic greetings; commands; names; days of the week; weather; patriotic-flag; geometric shapes; numbers; colors; classroom/home objects; parts of the body; family; animals; foods; fiestas, dances, holidays, birthdays; miscellaneous songs; nursery rhymes; finger plays; jump rope rhymes; and flannel board stories. Bay Area Bilingual Education League, Berkeley, CA. (1976). Mi Primer Libro de Palabras (My First Book of Words). This book was written to facilitate the learning and teaching of phonetic and vocabulary skills important for the development of reading. The book uses the manipulative approach to the usage of words. Words are presented with corresponding pictures in order to enhance the child's comprehension. Provenzano, Johanna Z., Ed. (1985). Promising Practices: A Teacher Resource (Grades 4-6). Part of a project to help teachers respond to the challenge of teaching content subjects to a variety of limited-English-proficient (LEP) learners, this report presents the recommendations of a group of master teachers who first identified promising practices for educating minority language students and then supplemented these by selecting learning activities that exemplify the ways in which the practices can be used successfully in the LEP classroom. The 29 promising practices are grouped under four headings: planning; classroom management; teaching procedures; and evaluation. Practices include emphasizing advance preparation, providing additional time for teaching vocabulary; creating opportunities for student-student interaction, instituting a reward system, encouraging parent-student activities, contextualizing instructional language, providing a hierarchy of questioning techniques, building self-esteem, and providing positive reinforcement and feedback. Sample lesson plans are given for each category, and a lesson evaluation checklist is provided that summarizes the 29 practices. A subject index is also included for the following areas: art, health, language arts, math, music, science, and social studies. Escobar, Joanna Sculley; Daugherty, John (1976). An Annotated Bibliography of Adult ESL Instructional Materials. This annotated bibliography of adult English as a second language (ESL) student materials, available at the Illinois ESL/Adult Basic Education (ABE) Services Center, was prepared for adult ESL administrators, coordinators, teachers, and teacher aides to provide a representative sampling of materials available and to assist in the selection of instructional materials suitable for adult ESL programs. Although the bibliography includes materials considered appropriate for high school ESL, Adult Basic Education, and native English speakers, all are evaluated from the perspective of the adult ESL student. For each entry the target population, target language background, student educational level presumed, student performance ability presumed, teaching approach, pacing, frequency of use of illustrations and answers, and approximate reading level are identified. Each is also rated on a five-point evaluative scale in several language areas and on several life skills. A section for comments provides additional information on supplementary materials and those areas requiring clarification or further explanation. Entries are categorized under the following curriculum areas: Basic texts, composition, spelling, conversation, pronunciation, grammar structure, life-coping skills, reading, listening, vocational/career English, idioms, citizenship/Americanization, specific language background (Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese), multimedia (language master cards, supplementary kits/packets), reference, vocabulary, gaming/simulation, literacy, and science. Provenzano, Johanna Z., Ed. (1985). Promising Practices: A Teacher Resource (Grades K-3). A collection of promising instructional practices for teachers of limited-English-speaking primary grade students is organized as a series of lessons on planning, classroom management, teaching procedures, and evaluation in a variety of content areas. Examples of basic learning activities intended to serve as a framework for teacher experimentation and innovation in the classroom are provided for each lesson. The lesson topics include: developing community awareness through various media, setting the table, individualizing social studies, the sea environment and animals, faces, conversation with an imaginary character, poems for fun, a Thanksgiving play, a science experiment using macaroni, experimentation with mirrors, baking gingerbread cookies, making tangrams, creative word lists, art and creative thinking through the Thumbelina story, training in small group work, making paper bag puppets, making introductions, making native American teepees, math dictation, word and guessing games, brainstorming, clothing identification, making collages, structured reading, learning alphabetical order, rhyming, making a scarecrow, developing test-talking skills, weather, tossing and catching games, paper dolls, and word and letter identification. This third grade elementary language text, designed for children in bilingual Inupiat-English programs in Ambler, Kabuk, Kiana, Noorvik, and Shungnak, is a story about the adventures of an animal named Alli and his friends. Each page of text is illustrated with a black-and-white drawing. Anstrom, Kris (1996). Defining the Limited-English Proficient Student Population, Directions in Language and Education. In order to develop a more uniform approach to determining the population of limited-English-proficient (LEP) individuals in the United States, and for purposes of educational decisions and resource allocation, the definition of this particular population is discussed in this theme issue. First, approaches currently used to estimate the size of the population and the variety of definitions are examined. Federal and state definitions are given, to exemplify the disagreement states and districts have over how to identify the LEP population accurately. Recommendations are made for a standardized definition, and the advantages and disadvantages of doing so are outlined. An appendix lists recent estimates of the LEP population and an explanation of each. It contains a story about a flower that begins to grow in a rug in a classroom. Each page of text is illustrated with a black-and-white drawing. Tuan, Do Dinh; And Others (1976). Chemistry: A Vietnamese Supplement. A High-School Bilingual Handbook for the Vietnamese Student. Indochinese High-School Supplement. This text is the first of a series of six bilingual handbooks especially designed for the Indochinese student in American high schools. Five of the supplements are in Vietnamese and each deals with a specific subject-area: chemisty, physics, biology, mathematics or U.S. history. The sixth book is in Khmer and is a supplement for U.S. history. The material presented in this handbook was compiled and adapted from high school texts. Each handbook in the series is composed of two parts, "Basic Concepts" and "Glossary of Technical Terms." Part I, "Basic Concepts," contains brief lessons pertaining to the appropriate subject area. These lessons provide key concepts of the subject presented in summary form. Preceding the Vietnamese summaries are outlines of the lessons in English meant to serve as a content guide for the teacher. Part II, "Glossary of Technical Terms," is a special dictionary. Technical terms pertinent to the subject area are presented in English followed by the Vietnamese equivalent and an extensive description of the term, with examples, when necessary, in Vietnamese. Hamayan, Else V.; Perlman, Ron (1990). Helping Language Minority Students after They Exit from Bilingual/ESL Programs. A Handbook for Teachers. This guide is intended as a resource for mainstream classroom teachers, K-12, who want to provide language minority students with additional support in their transition into classes where English is the language of instruction. The guide may also be used to help teachers make instruction more effective for all students and for teacher training. Areas addressed include the following: (1) assessing students in content-specific language proficiency (a table of predominant language functions required in selected content areas and a sample assessment instrument for content-specific language functions are provided; (2) setting up a buddy system with English-proficient peers; (3) preparing the student for a content-area lesson by teaching core vocabulary in advance and contextualizing lessons; (4) making language more comprehensible; (5) using cooperative grouping; and (6) collaborating with the English-as-a-Second-Language teacher. It is recommended that language minority students be regarded as resources in the mainstream classroom rather than as different or inferior. Potter, Diana; Hayden, Mary (2004). Parental Choice in the Buenos Aires Bilingual School Market, Journal of Research in International Education. The issue of parental choice of school for their child has been a topical one in many contexts worldwide, and work has been undertaken in a number of national contexts to investigate the many factors at work in influencing such choice.
