De Avila, Edward A.; Duncan, Sharon E. (1979). Bilingualism and the Metaset, NABE: The Journal for the National Association for Bilingual Education. Presented are findings from numerous studies in terms of a theory which integrates the theoretical position of Piagetian developmental psychology with the concept of the learning set proposed by Harlow. Blosser, Betsy J. (1986). Modeling Bilingualism on Television: Shaping the Linguistic Environment, NABE: The Journal for the National Association for Bilingual Education. Findings indicated over 50% approved of the show's language use because they attributed to it the intent of legitimizing bilingualism. Carpenter, Linda J. (1990). The Relative Influence on Diagnostic Decisions of Four Areas of Examiner Knowledge, NABE: The Journal of the National Association for Bilingual Education. Three vignettes about Hispanic boys referred for speech and language assessment were presented to 284 speech-language specialists. Decisions about the existence of a communication disorder, probable cause, and appropriate treatment were related to clinician specialty; experience; and knowledge of Spanish language, Hispanic culture, and second-language learning patterns; however, the influence of particular variables differed across vignettes. Descriptors: Communication Disorders, Decision Making, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Education

Waggoner, Dorothy (1989). Spanish Language Futures in the United States: A Methodological Critique, NABE: The Journal of the National Association for Bilingual Education. Criticizes Calvin Veltman's methodology in "The Future of the Spanish Language in the United States," in which he concludes that a majority of U.S.-born Spanish-dominant speakers are abandoning Spanish and becoming English speakers. Suggests that English language usage does not necessarily indicate English proficiency. Discusses educational implications. Descriptors: Bilingualism, Census Figures, Demography, Hispanic Americans

Ulibarri, Daniel M.; And Others (1981). Language Proficiency and Academic Achievement: A Study of Language Proficiency Tests and Their Relationship to School Ratings as Predictors of Academic Achievement, NABE: The Journal for the National Association for Bilingual Education. Comparability may be obtained for the Language Assessment Scale and the Bilingual Syntax Measure through a change in classification strategies which will also improve the equivalence of the tests and their correlation with achievement. Use of the tests along with teacher ratings should then provide meaningful criteria for classification.   [More]  Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Elementary Education, Hispanic Americans, Language Proficiency

Cziko, Gary A.; And Others (1979). French Immersion Programs and Students' Social Attitudes: A Multidimensional Investigation, NABE: The Journal for the National Association for Bilingual Education. A study of attitudes of English-speaking Canadian elementary school students, half of whom had participated in a French immersion program, indicated that extensive experience with another group's language led to reduction in the extensity of the language ethnicity dimension and in differences perceived between self, one's own ethnolinguistic group, and the relevant other ethnolinguistic group.   [More]  Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Elementary School Students, French, Immersion Programs
