Nakaba, Karen (1973). Isamu. This bilingual-bicultural reader in Japanese and English is intended for elementary school children in a bilingual education setting. Pen-and-ink drawings illustrate the story of a young Japanese-American boy at home and school. Each page of the text is written in Japanese characters, Romanized form, and in English. Ortiz, Flora Ida (1990). Student Teachers' Training in Teaching English as a Second Language, Teacher Education Quarterly. This study examined how videotaped microteaching for training student teachers affected the conduct of an English-as-a-Second-Language lesson, noting how faithfully student teachers transferred teaching behaviors acquired via videotaped microteaching to the classroom. Three student teachers in a bilingual education program participated. Results indicate that classroom context is critical. Dunn, Lloyd M. (1988). Has Dunn's Monograph Been Shot Down in Flames: Author Reactions to the Preceding Critiques of It, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. In response to reviewer criticisms, reiterates that the Hispanic community must share the blame for low Hispanic IQ scores and become involved in educational strategy development. Cummins, Jim (1988). "Teachers Are Not Miracle Workers": Lloyd Dunn's Call for Hispanic Activism, Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences. Discusses the cultural/linguistic bias in IQ tests, and the inevitability of this bias due to methods of test development and standardization. This article applies whole language techniques to children with cultural and linguistic differences and provides guidelines for enabling speech-language pathologists to assume a role of active involvement. Whole language can provide a context for involvement in the areas of bilingual education and other language and dialect learning and for conducting assessments and interventions.
